Succession Planning - Managerial Wishlist

Yeah I get you mate, just for some reason it hit a nerve. Not even on the subject of our failings, more the subject of lack of football knowledge in 'Supposed' Football fans. but that's my bad..

I realise sport nowadays is massively a FOMO subject to grab on to..
To be fair. The kids born in the early 90’s only know PL and have been told over and over how great the PL is. The likes have sky have created this mindset that football only mattered when the PL started and anything prior doesn’t count. We’ve seen some fans comment on Liverpool only winning two PL titles makes them a smaller club than Chelsea and City who have won more PL titles. It’s crazy but the PL is such a brand now and they’ve tried everything in there powers to erase football history prior to the PL starting.

It’s utter madness but the world we live in nowadays. Unfortunately we’ve fell foul to it. Aren’t we the only club in the last 30 years who haven’t won a trophy, been relegated, got promoted or had any form of celebration or anything? It’s sad really.

How relevant were Villa when they attracted Emery? How relevant were Everton when they attracted some bloke called Ancelloti?
Ancelotti was attracted to Everton because of the money he was receiving off us. Plus he was sold a dream of big funds to spend. He quickly realised that Moshiri and Usmanov were full of [Poor language removed].

To be fair, Villa were and are more attractive than Everton. They had the squad in place, great board in place and money to spend. Gerrard actually built a good squad at Villa, he was just a pony manager. There is this misconception of Villa that there squad was terrible when Emery took over. When in reality the squad was there, they just needed a good manager to steer them in the right path.

That stadium bit was replying to the poster saying our stadium is bigger than stuttgarts when it isn’t.

Of course we are heard of worldwide but not a massive club in those people’s eyes.

The PL isn’t as big in Europe like it is in Asia or the America’s. I’ve been lucky to go watch games in Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Austria and Holland. People from those countries don’t play a lot of attention to the PL like you think. I’ve been in Germany many of time and big games have been on. They arent shown, but they’ll have all bundesliga 1 and 2 games on. I’ve been in Poland when a Merseyside derby in the week has been on and it’s not been shown. Had to ask for them to show it in the pubs.

Clubs who regularly play European football will be more known than Everton.

During the boom of the PL we’ve been mainly rubbish.

i get that but we STILL are heard of mate

Ah right, I never realised that money was something that was capable of attracting managers before. Maybe we could use the same tactic once again? I mean, if it attracted the best manager in the history of the Universe, then maybe it could be used to attract another quality manager?

I'm not sure Villa were all that attractive when they were doing crap and sitting in the bottom half of the table with Villa, and I actually think that Villa may well have copied Everton with this novel tactic of attracting good managers by offering them a good salary.

Yup, there is a massive generational divide. I'm 53, so working from a far longer data set than the average 23-year-old. To him, Leicester City were far more of a threat to the "big six" - the name he will give to what we call the "Sky Six" (and the difference matters) - than Everton ever were. The relegations of Leicester are bigger news than if Everton had fallen. Leicester actually won things in his lifetime. Everton? Usually circling the drain. We've not differentiated ourselves from the likes of Fulham, Southampton, or West Ham other than from the peculiarity, to them, that while they have been relegated and yo-yoed, we have always managed to stay up and make up the numbers.

People my age are considered old-timers living in the past, with our bizarre demands that Everton be considered a big club just because they were when we were younger. We're as irrelevant to the 20-somethings as they see Everton is to modern football.

Your point about Liverpool's Premier League titles versus those of Chelsea and City sums it up. Even their history prior to 1992 has been virtually erased. As relevant as the dinosaurs.

I watch loads of pre-1992 football. I collect it and record it and compile it. Nerdery. Younger people would laugh at the idea. "Living in the past." In football terms, Everton definitely has been. Why would they regard us as a big club when we haven't been relevant for nearly 40 years. It'd be like me, in the 1980s, imagining Sunderland to be a huge club. Or Wolverhampton Wanderers. Or Huddersfield, Or Preston.

Whisper it: but until we have transformational ownership, we will continue to have more in common with those clubs than we will Chelsea, Manchester City, or even Spurs. Especially in the eyes of those "consuming" the current "product".

This is utter hogwash, they were in the relegation zone and had been in the Championship a couple of years earlier. The idea that Everton couldn't attract a decent manager is ludicrous and is a complete smokescreen for people who don't have decent arguments for retaining Moyes, so have to confect a fiction to justify his retention.

I remember going to an Everton event years ago at the Hilton in Liverpool.

John Heitinga had not long joined and he was awarded Player of the month. He spoke about signing for Everton and he said the first thing he did when his agent said Everton wanted to sign him was to goto Google and look us up as he didn't know anything about Everton as a club.

Money talks, we will make any new manager one of the highest paid in the world.

They will sign straight away.

We literally attracted Carlo Ancelotti when we were a penniless basket case but people act like we can’t attract a better manager than David Moyes.

Everton should aim to have the best manager possible. It’s no surprise that Palace and Villa have started to look like winning stuff when they went out and got managers who have actually won stuff.

Obviously if we offer big enough money then we can get them types of managers. Are we in that position has a club to go do that now? IMO, no. Go look at the squad Emery inherited at Villa. It’s a much better squad than what Moyes inherited.

Also Villa was more stable at that point than what Everton were when Moyes rejoined last season. On the field they had a better squad, off the pitch they was more stable.

I only want Moyes for one more season. And that’s so he can hopefully stabilise us next season in the top 8 positions, we then thank him, part ways and go get a world class manager with a winning mentality who can re-build the squad over the next 3 seasons to go win trophies again.

I just look at it from a reality point of view that 18months ago, the club was on the verge of liquidation. We had no functional board, our youth set up is a joke. We had to deal with potential owners with no money, who were borrowing for high rate payments back. We had no money, a squad that was average, lots of past key players out of contract. We were a mess.

We now seem to have a plan off the pitch and utilising the ground to our benefit. Commercial revenue is growing, sponsorships are bringing in more money. More money means bringing in better managers/players. Our squad is much better than previous seasons, although not great but improved.

I think it’s just hard for some people to accept that we are a nothing club to the wider footballing community, whether domestically or on the continent. Since 95 we’ve been to one lousy final, and I think three other semi finals. Barely in Europe. We’ve had more relegation battles than anything else.

We could have done that this year if Moyes took any of the chances brought his way. We know him by now. It's been, what, 14 years of nothing with him? Why persist with something you know isn't going to do anything. This idea of "let's give him another year so he can try for Europe" when he's failed to get a VERY attainable continental position this year is just mind boggling. I've been supporting Everton for 25 years and I've seen the square sum of FA. He's been manager for almost 2/3 of that time I've been watching.

I'd KILL for a manager who wants and gets us to play good football. Best I've seen is Martinez first season. But then HE decided possession based boring tikitaka is the way forward. Koeman was crap, Silva was crap.
