Rooney (18 months left on a contract)

I keep seeing discussions in this thread about Rooney, and I' not sure if it's a joke or not. Do you guys really think Rooney will come back? There's not a chance.

Why? There's a very real chance that next season we could offer him Champions League football and United might not.

It's not all about money.

In fact, if they don't beat Sunderland in the League Cup, there's a very real possibility that United won't be playing European football next season.

If it came down to Rooney or Lukaku at the end of the season, what would people want?

(Not saying we've a chance of either, but interested to hear people's arguments.)

That's a [Poor language removed] of a choice!

Business head says Lukaku, heart screams Rooney.

Lukaku could double his value in a couple of years, whereas Rooney could bring huge belief and optimism to the club and is the superior player.

Even if we managed to scrape together 150k/week to pay him, Chelsea'd double that.

Even if he didn't make a fuss about the wages, Utd wouldn't sell to us at £15-20m when Chelsea'd double that.

Talk about Rooney coming here in his prime is delusional. Maybe when he's 33-34 and at that point I'm not sure he'd be anything more than a squad player. His next contract will be signed either at United or at Chelsea.

Why are we talking as though we have money? This is still the club that one year ago couldn't come up with 8 million pounds for a CM when we were absolutely dying for one.

Rooney for me. He's what we need right now, although Lukaku in 5 years is potentially going to be the best forward in the world so it's a close choice.

I think your right in term of "what we need now" I think with Rooney's all round game being far more polished, we'd have a good few extra points this season. Also Rooney can score something out of nothing, which we haven't yet really seen from Lukaku.

I do think however, that Rooney would cost more than people are thinking about. Even with him in his last year of contract and if United didn't qualify for Europe, it'd still be high. A 30yr old Van Persie was sold for £24million with a year left on his contract

Imagine what it would be like for young kids like Chris Long and Conor McAleny to be training with Rooney and learning from him.

Hi Conor x

Yup, add in the fact that he is English and the fee will be much more than we can afford. Even if he won't sign an extension with Utd I think people are underestimating the calibre of player he is and how much interest he'd garner from rich clubs.

For him to be here next year he'd have to pretty much say I want to play for Everton and no one else.

This has always been the case, we're not naive enough to think we can compete wages wise with the like of Chelsea. If he wants to come, he'll come

He won't of course, because he's greedy...and so is his missus

Due to Rooney signing his last contract under the age of 28, after the first 3 years of that contract (which has been and gone) he can buy out his contract. If he did this, there'd be no transfer few, but he'd no doubt expect a massive signing on fee to cover the cost of buying out his contract, and any lost earnings as well. The question would be would he do that?

Something else that we'd need to take into account in a Rooney vs Lukaku debate would be longevity.

Say we did buy Rooney, I'd pretty much imagine he'd stay with us until retirement. The former wonderkid returned to his boyhood club etc.

If we signed Lukaku, we may only get one or two seasons out of him before a PSG, Real Madrid etc decide they want him.

If Rooney was intrested in coming to us, he and his agent knows that he would be giving up millions in wages & MKT opps to join everton. Who knows, just maybe he would happy to take 70 grand a week and 3m signing on fee becuase he just wants to see out his last football contract with everton football club.

This is true..but on the other hand, if the likes of PSG, RM are interested then a: he's done well for us and b: we'll get a pretty penny for him and can then afford a good replacement

He won't come to us whilst he can earn upwards of 200k or even 150k at a host of clubs lads, forget about it, may as well be talking about nthe chances of getting Zlatan ibra here as talk about getting in rooney
