He won't come back, and I don't want him back. Why turn a beautiful team thing that is developing at Everton into a Rooney -fest for a couple of years. Am I alone in thinking that a Rooney return would inhibit Martinez' plans for progress? Discuss .

Difficult mate. And I can see your point.

Rooney coming back would be a big deal. It would be all about him.

But, if he bought into the things Martinez was doing, and played to his upmost to fit in, which he would because he's awesome at football, it could be amazing.

Have you seen him this season? He's the only reason United are in the top half of the table right now. Next season, we'll be sans Lukaku as well so no obvious goal threat. If we can get Rooney in his prime for £10m, it's an absolute no brainer.

Ignoring the actual likelihood of it happening (stand on Me ; ergo ; P& l), I think adding Rooney to the current squad would make us title contenders. The intelligence and technique he has on the pitch would fit perfectly and, for all his perceived ego, he's very much an unselfish team player who can help others raise their game. The younger lads would benefit immensely from playing with him.

I'd love it.

Indeed it would be a no brainer Jockers, but if, and its a big if, he was available for circa £10m, I just cannot see us competing wage/package wise with at the very least Chelsea and Arsenal.

Shame really, cos it would be ace.

He'd obviously have to be willing to take a wage cut, a massive one, but he's a seriously rich individual already. If we finish top 4, we could offer £75-95k a week, not exactly a small amount of money.

Especially once we stop paying £65k a week for a bench warming centre half.

This is spot on.

True. Lets see. And maybe hope.

Say Baines does leave, combine his wages with those of Jelavic's and Heitinga's and you've got a tidy little sum to pay him with, say around 140k, and he's worth every penny.

Getting into the Champions League group stage is essential. The extra revenue from that would more than offset the cost of signing him.

Maybe United see things differently, but looking at the quality of our squad and theirs and where both teams could end up this season, if they sold Rooney to us for a low fee, I'd be 95% sure Moyes and their board are on super crack. They're already miles behind the top 3, quality wise. It'd be madness to let us strengthen further whilst setting themselves back by letting their top performer leave.

The only way I could see Rooney coming back is when his contract is up.

If it came down to Rooney or Lukaku at the end of the season, what would people want?

(Not saying we've a chance of either, but interested to hear people's arguments.)

Rooney for me. He's what we need right now, although Lukaku in 5 years is potentially going to be the best forward in the world so it's a close choice.

I keep seeing discussions in this thread about Rooney, and I' not sure if it's a joke or not. Do you guys really think Rooney will come back? There's not a chance.
