Rooney (18 months left on a contract)

Doubt fat lad would go for it, the selfish sh!t. But if he REALLY loves the club he can part with millions and millions of his own pounds and pull the old 'Article 17 trick'.

Article 17 of Fifa’s transfer code gives provision for players over the age of 24 to quit their clubs 12 months before their deals are due to expire – if they have served out a three-year ‘protected’ period.

I'm sure Bill will have £10m 'ring fenced' to pay him back.

I believe that part of Rooney would love to come back and play for Everton again, and if this had been 30 or 40 years ago it would have been a real possibility. Sadly football has moved on, it's become this massive global business. People have already raised the issue of his wages, which is indeed a huge stumbling block especially when you consider what other clubs will be offering compared to what we can offer. But the real killer for me is that Rooney isn't just a player, he's a brand. And he has to consider the impact of any move on brand Rooney, with all the advertising and self-promotional potential which this involves. It's not just a question of what wages he can earn : wages are just a small part of his earning potential. It's about opening new doors and getting access to income streams that will help him a new life after he retires from football.

Any 'evertonian' that puts their brand above playing for everton

Isn't an Evertonian.

Simple as that.

Do you think that would happen to Barcelona? Topical at the moment.

Would it ****

I never thought I'd say this, but the way we're playing at the minute, I'd rather pay actual money for him and get him now.

(Personality notwithstanding)

Hand on heart I think we have more chance of Lukaku signing for us than getting Rooney. Don't think either will happen. Pray I am wrong again though.

If the transfer fee and wages were similar who would you prefer?

I have to say I'd prefer Lukaku. Rooney has been brilliant for united this season and all the history stuff that goes with him being a lifelong evertonian can't be ignored. But Lukaku and Barkley, playing together for us from such a young age and forming that understanding. That would be the foundations of a great side for a long time.

I may be a little over concerned, something is niggling me about Everton taking a chance on signing new/returning players who have had a busy world cup. A lot of world Cup/European Championship players have terrible seasons immediately after these events. Rooney could easily have a poor season next season, so could some others. Its one reason why I would not be too disappointed if Baines went to United, as long as the fee was right. He would very likely not be at his best after the World Cup. Xavier was terrible when he came back from the Euros, and just look at Heitinger.
Jagielka, Oviedo, Howard, and the Belgian boys will all be running their arses of in Brazil, and this could effect us next season. Other clubs as well, of course.
