He came in and and fixed the problem we'd had for 15 years: what do everton do against teams who park the bus?
Sure, the wheels came off but, with hindsight, we should have given him the 200m and not rocket ronnie.
Just imagine, we could have bought three Wigan's with that.

What did he have?
How is it proven that he's lost whatever that is?
We aren't Utd. End of story. LvG has won everything at club level and couldn't crack it there, having spent 100s of millions.
Sociedad (spl?). Language barrier.
Sunderland? A poisoned chalice. No money to spend.

You make plenty of excuses for Moyes as to why he hasn't been able to replicate what he did with us.
He knows us though. Will get time. Will sort that defence out. Could get us back to 6th?

Isn't he the perfect choice for you Ian?
Respecting the great job Moyes did does not mean I want Moyes back. Rodgers had a better season than anything Klopp or Martinez came up with, playing superior football to anything Klopp and Martinez offered, do you reckon Liverpool fans want him back?

There were several factors that came in to play in that first season under Martinez. Ferguson had just left Man Utd. We took six points from them that season – something that had never happened in the premier league era. Add that to the fact that Pellegrini was in his first season in the premier league, Tim Sherwood was at Tottenham, and Mourinho was just back at Chelsea. We can also add into the mix that Liverpool, with Suarez were taking points from those teams. All of those things probably flattered our points total and position for the season.

Look at whose managing the so called “big six” now – Klopp, Pochettino, Wenger, Guardiola, Mourinho, and Conte. The managers are much better at those clubs, than they were in that first season under Martinez – Rodgers, Sherwood, Wenger, Pellegini, Moyes, Mourinho. Those clubs are much harder to beat now.

Martinez was lucky enough to inherit a disciplined back four. He got a bit lucky with Lukaku, as he was actually going for someone else. He was also fortunate in the fact that Barkley was just about ready for the big time.

We also need to remember, that even during that first “glorious” season, we got murdered 4-0 at Anfield. He also didn’t really sign anyone decent after that first transfer window.

Koeman did inherit dross, but didn’t help himself, but I am thinking he would have managed to finish higher than 11th, with Lukaku in his side.

Martinez was worse. A disingenuous, self-serving con-man who was inviting HK to Finch Farm on the one hand to ingratiate himself with our support, whilst on the other he was bringing the spine of Wigan Athletic to Goodison Park. Not to work the turnstiles, or serve the Chang, but for Robles, Alcaraz, McCarthy and Kone to wear the Royal Blue Jersey. Squad looked a disgrace to the shirt in his last season.

Koeman's failure this season has been historic, though, no doubt about it. We must be talking about one of the worst reversals of fortune in memory, to go from where we were last season, plus sizeable investment, to where we are now. Hard to understand the total clue-lessness at work, because as average as Koeman is I wouldn't have put him in the Mike Walker category.

Great points.

I've often reminded people that we finished 5th in a season where Spurs and United were that BAD they both sacked their managers.

It was the most enjoyable season supporting Everton since Joe Royle.

So yeah, it was massively different.
It was ok but we won nothing and finished 5th. Nice but nothing to rave about. Seems to me mate that you and others loved the season so much because of what you thought it represented (a return to the good old days) rather then what it was, an ok season that meant nothing in the grand scheme of things.

You have completely avoided answering my questions Ian.
To answer yours, would Liverpool want to bring back a manager that has never won anything outside of Scotland, to replace their proven winner manager? I can't imagine so.

To say that the footy they produced was far superior to Martinez's first season is absolute fabrication too. They had a top 3 of Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge finishing their chances. We had a raw Lukaku, Steven Naismith and Ross Barkley.

You hate Martinez so much that you're blinded.

Can you name a better one during the Premier League outside of Joe Royle's reign?

Finishing fourth by marching on with relentless 1-nil victories?

The FA cup final reaching season?

Both two of my favourites but neither matched the enjoyment of that first season under Martinez.

After the three - nil against Arsenal I actually believed we were on the cusp of something truly special - so in that respect the bolded part above is true.

It's a bit wierd how they both started off so good and then went major gash at the same time, they both started to decline near the end of their first season.
