Roberto Martinez discussion

Here's an interesting point though - let's set aside the defensive questions and ask whether Martinez has bought well. So, in effect, I'm asking, with a different manager to replace him, would he have left us in a better shape than when he arrived? I think one way to answer the question is to pit a Martinez XI against the remainder of the Moyes Squad

Martinez has - largely - bought younger players to supplement the existing squad.

His squad of players;

Robles,
Holgate, Mattioni, Funes Mori, Galloway - there's obviously a case to argue he's brought Stones into the side as well (Alcaraz bought and sold)

Macca, Lennon, Cleverley, Barry, Besic, McGeady - a lot of industry and only a little stardust

Geri, Rom, Kone, Oumar - the area where he's speculated a lot more.. (also E'too)

Moyes Squad:

Howard
Hibbert, Coleman, Baines, Jags, Stones
Barkley*, Osman, Pienaar, Oviedo, Gibson
Mirallas

- significant departures under Martinez you might add to the above (remaining players): Distin, Naismith, Jelavic, Anichebe, Fellaini

* whom Moyes didn't trust much

Total Spend - circa £40M

I think only a harsh critic would say he hasn't improved the squad. There's very little deadwood in our side - McGeady, Howard and Hibbert for sure - possibly all of whom won't be with us next season. The defence hasn't been improved a great deal though some promising youngsters have come (Galloway in particular).
Your right, he has bought in some quality players, unfortunately we are not getting the best out of them as yet. But to compare his squad with what Moyes left is a little bit foolish to say the least. Before you made he comparison did you consider the finances that were available to each manager, and as for not trusting Barkley did it not occur to you that he was considerably younger in Moyes's reign and had not long come back from a serious injury. JUST HIGHLIGHTING ONE OR TWO POINTS THAT MIGHT HAVE A BEARING ON YOUR COMPARISON'S XXX

I thought that was a terrible performance by Martinez today. We played Bournemouth reserves today. We created nothing. At half time we were second best and needed him to manage the situation, he abdicated responsibility and left things as they were. We got a deflected goal and a second from a desperate corner. They missed a penalty and Gosling missed a sitter.
Today, at half time, was an opportunity to show leadership and nothing happened.
I extremely happy with the win and to be in the quarterfinals but if anyone is happy with what we just saw I despair.

You do realise we scored 2 and could/should have scored more?

And if by season end, we've got to either 8th or preferably 5th, we can therefore judge the season as relatively successful and not a failure.
Tenth or lower and I for one will be thoroughly underwhelmed and I suspect there'll be many more like me!!

I think two SF spots and anywhere in the top half will be a very good season. We're very close to that now. Just need a decent draw tomorrow and get our heads doiwn in the last 12 PL games.

The truth is that, results wise, this season has always been on a knife edge between discernible progress and treading water. The next three months will give us the definitive answer on that.

There's no basis for any comparison here besides hypotheticals.
Has he improved the squad? Yes
Has he spent a ton of money? Yes
Has anyone else been in the same position at Everton? No
Would someone else have done better with the 60 million spent? We can never know.
