Roberto Martinez discussion

No. But that a) doesn't make it any less of a horrendous season, or b ) detract from the fact that Moyes had Everton picking up their worst final placings total for 44 years.
Yep, it was awful. Moyes is very lucky that he was only two seasons removed from Walter Smith when that happened, or else he'd have probably been sacked.

I imagine there was also no money to pay him off or buy another manager out of his contract.

Possibly. He signed a 4 year deal and the club had already paid a million to PNE in compo.

In no way an excuse but the rebuilding job he had to do was major that time. He left the club in a much better place than he found it and for that I will always be grateful.

He left it needing overhauling - his own words, btw concerning the age of the group he left.

No, thats not acceptable.

By a long chalk.

Moyes this, Moyes that.

Stop living in the past.

Martinez has a squad full of international players, he has a squad full of the brightest talents in European football, "getting by in the league" isnt good enough, you cried all last season that Europa ruined our season, we fell at the first hurdle in both cup comps and we got embarrassed by a lesser team in Ukraine due to the managers failings. We all want to win something, anything, but our goal as a football club should be to break the top 4, it was our goal under Moyes and has been our goal since your idol Moyes dragged us from relegation battles and brought European football back to the club.

Our goal should be European football every season, Europa or the big ears, that should be our goal, European football helps us attract a higher quality of player and it keeps our current players happy. Not a single player in the world will care if we win the FA Cup, not 1 jot, how did Wigans FA Cup allow them to attract players? Its quite a worry that the Manager, well to put it 1 way, cant manage a top team in this league, hell he cant even manage a crap team in this league.

Personally I think hes better suited to Championship level, maybe even League One, a team with no ambition, a team with fans like you who are happy to get to Semi Finals and get dicked everywhere by the bigger teams. At the start of the season he had a number of goals, European football and a cup, he was givin a vast sum of money to spend on players to achieve this goal and he built a squad more than capable of finishing in the European spots.

We might still land a Europa, we might even get a trip to Wembley, something Moyes did quite regular, for the record, he will forever be in Moyes shadow, Moyes eclipses him in every way so far, more Wembley trips, more Europa, better attractive football, cos despite you attempting to re-write history, on the whole we played much better under Moyes, we attacked at pace and hit teams hard, something Martinez only does Away.

So you keep holding Moyes up as the benchmark, a Manager that failed to achieve what we deserve, failure to prepare, prepare to fail.

Best bit of popcorn I've read on here for a while.

It is a fair comment about 'job done'. Allowing for inflation and the fact that other teams never at the races when Moyes was here are spending fortunes on players we are spending about what we always did. So doing exactly what Moyes did but also providing pleasing football does represent a good return...and it'll be better results wise next season with someone like Begovic giving us a commanding presence in the box.

Only thing I'd argue is that its very hard getting a player to fit a gap when you have to sell someone to get the player, and then have to plug the gap that sold player leaves behind.. compared to just being able to buy a player.

Its more than just the amount of money.. its having spare money that is the big difference. Buy to improve as opposed to sell to buy.. its a huge difference in tasks. And to take over the squad he did and move us into bottom half so rapidly has take a few by surprise and when he talks like he sees it as both acceptable and often as an achievement its enough to make most angry.

I agree that i think next season could potentially be very explosive and very impressive for us if we improve in key areas and keep what we have, but again that highlights the difference.. Moyes could never of done that.. to get Begovic, he would of had to sell Lukaku or Stones.. Although he would of finished in 6th last season so would of been able to put an additional 5m to the transfer fee ;)

A bit of a worry I know but I've been thinking...

Back in the early days when all was sweetness and light on the brown shoe front. We, the team and fans, had to learn this possession stuff and pretty soon we were sort of getting it but still with the training wheels on. We could grasp the point of keeping the ball as they can't score without it.
We were inundated in 60%'s V's this team and 65%'s V's that team. To be fair we initially clung to these stats. Then came Boxing day 2013 V's Sunderland with the Howard Osman soft shoe shuffle. This in my opinion is where it all started to go down hill.
Fast forward to WBA, most of us have left those early day behind and now see that possession without an end result...ANY RESULT! Is pointless...In both senses of the word.

Now this is where I need help...No, not to get to the point, I've got that sorted.

FA Cup V's Roberto's Wigan. That winning performance with minimum possession. This and this alone - was and is the true Roberto...but I don't think he knows or sees this. When He and We win like this and we do seem to do it quite a lot. I think he says to himself, 'Not exactly what the Philosophy is about but I'll take it.'

Back to the help...I need a 'Statto' to sort our wins by possession. Because I feel this is the true Roberto, not the massive possession pass them to death, walk the ball into the net.

Not to defend or crucify him just to place him...I still want him gone.
