Reflections on Koeman

I can't grasp how good he was a at Southampton then came here and was rubbish. I guess it boils down to expectations lets be honest Southampton it's staying up end of. Walsh is equal to blame as well.

I think there was too much of a squad overhaul in that period, added to the fact that we didn't replace Lukaku and signed too many number 10s. Steve Walsh has a lot to blame for that though and also the ridiculous fixture list at the beginning of the season didn't help. Koemans treatment of Niasse and the constant public criticism of Barkley; felt like he was pushing him out the door. But the fact that he just did not connect with the fanbase from Day 1 is what set him up for failure.

It's alright being a a "cold" manager down south, where people are basically that way inclined, dissociated, and generally less friendly....."how dare you speak to me on a train/bus" attitude. But his detachment from Everton sent a feeling that he just wasn't going to stick around whether he would be a success or not. He just wasn't a good fit.

His contemptuous attitude didn't help and I wonder if it filtered down to the players. Also, I know Niasse isn't great, and I'm surprised Koeman went after him and not one of the establishment players like Jags or Coleman, but there was no need to be so pointlessly cruel. The Secret Footballer once wrote that new managers like to show they're in control by singling out one player and picking on them, and it looks like that's what Koeman must have done.

I don't even remember if he did the Alder Hey visit. Even Allardyce did that, FFS. And Martinez, for all his flaws, got involved in EITC and so is Silva now, and EITC is a huge part of the club. And yes, I know it's his performance on the pitch that matters the most, but bear in mind that Klopp and Guardiola have done that kind of thing off the pitch too.

I agree with you , including about the charity works. If Klopp gets involved , then there is absolutely no excuse for a manager of ours not to. The amount of charity work that the RS are involved in , is miniscule compared to us.

I think Walsh played a massive part in this forgettable moment in our recent history.

Strange though that how the two much maligned managers we have sacked are now in prime international managerial positions and aren't doing too bad!

In Martinez's case, he could hardly fail with that Belgium squad. I could succeed there :D

We have come so far in just a year!

Line up for this:

Pickford
Kenny Holgate Williams Baines
Davies Schneiderlin Gueye
Ramirez Rooney Sigurdsson

Bench: Stekelenburg, Martina, Vlasic, Klaasen, Mirallas, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin

Line up last weekend:

Pickford
Coleman Keane Zouma Digne
Gomes Gueye
Walcott Sigurdsson Bernard
Richarlison

Bench: Stekelenburg, Baines, Mina, Davies, Lookman, Calvert-Lewin, Tosun

Coleman and Keane back in the team (both presumably injured against Limassol) but aside from that the new players are:

Zouma, Digne, Gomes, Walcott, Bernard and Richarlison with Tosun and Mina on the bench!

You've just reminded me of how mad people used to get at Koeman playing Sigurdsson on the wing and not in the middle.

Look at the team he was putting out at Southampton. It's weird because it is Southampton but he had Alderweireld one year and Van Dijk the next. Mane was excellent there. Pelle was a useful finisher. Wanyama was in midfield. Those teams were legitimately talented.

I feel like a bit of a tit cos I was one of the people who really wanted him, because I like what I saw at Southampton under him and he seemed refreshing after Martinez. In hindsight, I should have realised the writing was on the wall when he took so long to say yes because he was on holiday.

Also, he had his heart set on getting Giroud and didn't have any backup plan for when Giroud turned us down.

He didn't really give a [Poor language removed] he was only here for the money and in his arrogance thought it would be a stepping stone to the Barca job but it blew up in his face and he was found out to be the clueless buffoon he is ..

Mike Walker took Norwich to third in the prem, then past Bayern Munich in the UEFA cup and ran Inter Milan close next round [never heard a convincing explanation for this ever]. Blerto won the FA cup with Wigan. Sometimes very mediocre managers can achieve great things if the circumstances are right and they're pouring their heart and soul into it.
Ron is actually a level above those two comedians, but he's still average, had adverse circumstances, and was basically phoning it in - speaking with hindsight here but there was always the danger that something going wrong would snowball into a catastrophe with a disinterested Ted at the helm.

Other than his first month in charge were we picked up good points, the rest of his tenure was abject. We had a spell from September to December were we won about 1 game. He was fortunate to have a Lukaku scoring goals trying to get his next move and likewise with Barkley.

Generally got his deriere handed to him on a plate by several teams.

Hes a good coach, but limited passion etc and seems a bit of mercenary. I actually think we binned him to early, i think he could have had a better year given time then what transpired.

Anyhow the root and branch over the summer have kicked us to where we should have been last year, last year was just an utter waste.
