He was over the hill when he came to Goodison and only played a season or so in a poorish team so we never expected miracles.
However even at his peak I never saw justification for the then frequent comparisons with the real elite. Flashes of inspiration but never a great player. At the time the likes of Michael Laudrup were far better creative mids.
The tears at the World Cup gave the media a story and his importance was vastly exaggerated as a result.
many would mindlessly compare him at his pre injury peak to a Ball a Best or an Iniesta. No way.
Tim Cahill (runs and hides)
Leon Osman
Kevin Maralles
David Weir
David Unsworth
Duncan Fergusson (runs and hides again) - more so for his ability. As a talisman, fighter and all round guy he's top class.
Difference was Makelele knew how to tackle, intercept, read the game, pass forward, offer passing options. He was the complete midfielder who just specialised in sitting deeper because of his brilliant game awareness. Sadly he's now excused a whole generation of rubbish players who can barely play, can't pick a pass, have no awareness, but seem defensive and that's ok because it's the 'Makelele' role. Some managers even want two of these now. Ferguson never bought a proper defensive mid though and he won a pot or two. Funny that the more attacking midfielders you play the more attacking football you play.
I always thought Fellaini would be my answer to this question until the last few seasons really put a new meaning to the word overrated.
