2025/26 Nathan Patterson

Yet again it's just a really weird case of people making out like every player who isn't brilliant is objectively awful and should be playing in league 2, and then going massively overboard when it turns out they aren't as bad as they said. Patterson is a bog standard PL squad player, he's not completely out of his depth at this level and is quite capable of playing a few games without being a hindrance to the side, this shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

The Joel Robles of full backs, can do a job but some people hype them up.

Where do they make these stats up?

The aerial duels for instance: I saw one such 'duel' late on yesterday when Patterson raced ahead of a winger to head the ball out of play. A 'duel'.

Ten 'defensive contributions': taking a pass and giving it to someone else - so what? Ten - in 94 minutes of football for a RB. Lol.

I suppose if you really want to justify the inclusion of someone you could make nonsense stuff up like 'A view from the Bullens'.

I know what I saw: a RB that tucked in behind McNeill and hardly ventured forward all game and offers us nothing other than someone to stand in empty space and discourage an opposition player from moving into it. FFS, anyone off this forum could do that if they're fit enough to run around for 94 minutes.

When are people going to stop making excuses for a so called professional footballer at this level? 'He did well yesterday'. FFS. Talk about damned with faint praise.

He's lower league standard at the very best.

Of you really want to justify the inclusion of someone … you could look at the fact he’s started 2 league games away from home and we have won both and conceeded none

…yep, as I’ve posted recently, I totally agree with the balance point.

Problem with Patterson is the risk of him doing something stupid, it’s what’ll be at the forefront of Moyes’ decision making although this week should be another opportunity for him.
You make it sound like he’s doing stupid things game after game.

The defensive side of the game, decisions, positioning etc is something that can be learned and improved with game time. But you do actually need to give a young player the game one to improve it.

Coleman had a lot to improve defensively when he first came in and indeed, Moyes was reluctant to play him for that reason. He massively improved with games and experience over a number of seasons.

I don’t mind giving young players a chance to develop, particularly when the alternative isn’t pulling up trees. My problem with Paterson is he’s 24 and he’s missed the last two years of development, he also just seems to be so injury prone.

If we don’t sign a right back in January, we’re not getting relegated, I’m fine with giving him a run until the end of the season, see if he improves, see if he stays fit. I’m sure he won’t go the rest of the season without mistake but not many players will.

Why are you not so hellbent on criticising any other of our players for the most bizarrely random things and keep finding new ones, considering you've also never met him?

Sorry I want an Everton player to do well and you don't mate.

He very much did as he got ran past or was a calamity himself if there wasn't anyone to protect him, and he got forward so fine he's got no assists in years.

So he played well, ok, thanks.

It seems to be either an anti-Rangers sentiment and/or a very pro-Coleman sentiment.

If you go on the Coleman thread, then you'll see the same posters regularly posting highly complimentary comments.

I presume this is the outcome of Coleman being such a positive force for Everton and Ireland for so long and then getting replaced by an ex-Rangers player.

A bit odd, but there you go.

Yep - clear bias involved, some of it comes across pretty nasty as well. Impossible to take what is said seriously.

FWIW - I have never particular rated Patterson but his development has been stunted by injuries which just didn't help. Came here too early with not enough playing experience under his belt, struggled at a time when we have been pretty unstable as a club. I do think Moyes will improve hum but in all reality expect him to be gone in the Summer.

Yeah, whatever it is, it's not a pro-Everton sentiment.

I've not thought Patterson's had much of a chance for at least a year now.

Too many injuries to get any kind of consistency in such a demanding league.

Then, that's no reason not to give him support when he does play and does about as well as most of the other players in the team.

Can you refresh us where theres a "risk of him doing something stupid"
Do you refer to his mistakes leading to goals agst us ? If so can you list them pls.
Then compare to the rest of our defenders , thanks.

Certain posters will not admit Everton look a much more balanced team with a right back playing in that position rather than a centre half. Patterson no mater how much they cryarse has played well the last couple of games. The problem with Patterson is he's hardly ever fit, which is why we need a new right back.
