2025/26 Nathan Patterson

There's no doubt that people, and that includes players, mature and develop at different ages. I think that Patterson is a late developer in this regard, and may turn out to be a decent player through his mid and late 20's. He's got some positive attributes. Maybe Dyche's slap around the head might have made that penny drop !!

And he was largely incidental to it.

Look, he's an accident waiting to happen isn't he?
Wouldn't say he was incidental. As a team we look so much more balanced with him playing right back and Jake in the middle.

Which isn't to say that he's put in jawdropping performances in those games at all. He just is a right back, and that has a positive effect on how the team functions.

He's done well enough that he should keep his place for the time being, but we still desperately need to sign a better starter for that position.

Dave do we look more balanced as a team with Patterson playing at right back instead of Obrien. A yes or no please with a bit of reasoning thrown in. And he was not incidental to that performance at Villa Dave we all watched it that reason won't suffice.

Can you refresh us where theres a "risk of him doing something stupid"
Do you refer to his mistakes leading to goals agst us ? If so can you list them pls.
Then compare to the rest of our defenders , thanks.

Itls a no.

When we played Patterson against Forest and Villa it was everyone behind the ball and in a defensive shape most of the game.

Never mind O'Brien, anyone off this forum could do that job if they're young enough to run around for a game of football.

We have to play in a way that doesn't isolate Patterson.

Even if Keane is still suspended we'll have Gueye back and that should alleviate Garner to go back to RB where he'll be a lot more of a safe choice geting forward.

We're going to have a lot more players in the opposition half against Leeds than we did against Villa, so we need a back line that's defensively up to the counter attacks.
David, don't bring your disturbing hatred of a player into trying to move the diamond of our team into Rb.

That hatred, blinds your eyes to the club..

I dont 'hate' him at all.

He's just a big soft lad who cant defend without someone standing guard over him and is a liability in attack

He's no use whatsoever to any team that want to got out and play attacking football. We'd be lacerated by the opposition on the break....as we know...because we've seen it on multiple occasions when this lad is caught out of position blowing for tugs jogging back from upfield exposing us. That's why Moyes handed him specific instructions to be in a defensive RB position at all times and then told whoever was on that side with him to make sure he wasn't isolated.

That cant be part of our future as a club if we want to climb the table and stay there.

When he’s fully fit and had a run of games. He plays ok. Most of his shockers have been when he’s thrown back in straight after injury or on as a sub. When he got into the team under Lampard he played well until his injury.

Keane makes errors all the time, and Tarkwoski is more likely to play a bad ball than Patterson, same with OBrien from right back. Can criticise him for not being available enough or attitude behind the scenes but when he’s on the pitch and in form he really hasn’t done that much wrong.

Yeah I get that, we desperatly need a Rb. But if it isn't happening this window which i very much doubt it will.
We can't be hindering anymore of O'Briens development by playing him there, and with Patterson atleast he is a Fb. You never know with a run of games he could tide us over well for the rest of the season.

Certainly not worse than Jake is in that position.
Also Illy will do a lot of work helping back, he always does..

He's shown enough to justify a longer stint in the lineup. That, and we look better with JOB at CB. I don't want to be moving Garner to RB given the form he is showing in midfield, for all he's done an admirable job there.

And..... also the fact we don't have another currently fit actual RB.

Give him a go for a few more games and see how he does. Not that Moyes will do that imo - it'll be JOB back to RB and Keane back in, and then JB replacing Keane in 2-3 games when he's fully up to speed.
