Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Those banners and pics are amazing. You need to come to the Durham Miners Gala. Loads of the old colliery banners on display and marched through Durham accompanied by brass bands. It is a great day out. Usually have some good speakers. Heard the late great Bob Crowe (RMT General Secretary) speak a few times. Looking forward to this year - first year back post lockdown.
I went to see this at the pictures, it’s now added to my bucket list of things to do. I like a brass band.

It is an amazing occasion. A real celebration of the working classes and a sad reminder that none of those pits are open anymore. I did voluntary work for Unite In The Community for a while. That was based in the Durham Miners Union HQ. I used to love having a cuppa with the ageing but still feisty ( and who could drink anybody under the table) former Miner's Union officials who still organise the gala.

I love McCartney but not the biggest fan of the Stereophonics after they refused to support the Manics at a gig in Wales. They got way above their station.

Have seen them maybe 4/5 times at festivals and Dakota is an absolute belter of a song.
They're very good in fairness AT. I'd recommend you record it, or what's left. The sound quality is excellent.

UDM creeped to Thacther & she still closed their pits .....
A happy memory for me going around a car boot & spotted a very small key ring miners lamp purchased it for 50p for my then Father in law a coal miner for most of his life & a strong Trade Unionist.......

I gave it to him & he was made up till he read the insignia of the UDM on the brass lamp .....

You can stick that up your arsp a load of scabs .....I don't want that thing ......

So I placed it on eBay many many years ago - it sold for £60.00....

So any UDM memorabilia must be hot .....as they were short lived ......

Just enjoying some McCartney on Beeb2. He's 80 today. How do you feel about sharing a birthday with him T?

When he was young he actually lived in the same road I grew up in. His mum was the local midwife in the days babies were still being born at home.
And I went to Stocko, a good few years after he was there, George Harrison also lived in Speke, so you lived in Western Ave Fred?

McCartney attended Stockton Wood Road Primary School in Speke from 1947 until 1949, when he transferred to Joseph Williams Junior School in Belle Vale because of overcrowding at Stockton.

Me too mate. I was probably there between 66 and 72.

Didn't know George lived in Speke.

Yep

The Beatles guitarist moved to 25 Upton Green in Speke, Liverpool, in 1949 when he was six years old. Harrison rehearsed with John Lennon and Paul McCartney at the house, which his family left in 1962 just as the Fab Four were about to hit the big time.Nov 30, 2021
