Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

That's a good night. You're doing so well Fred, Cal would be so proud of you x
Cheers Anj. Cal would have enjoyed it herself. They're a good fun bunch. Enjoyed the ride in the Jag convertible too. I didn't expect him to keep the top down for the ride back too but it actually sobered me up a bit. Think he was testing me again. But as you say I'm a scouser. ?

I read that nodding and agreeing then thought, hang on, I would do the same for a glimpse of the Pope lol
I did do that when JP2 visited Liverpool in the 1980s. Waited all day to see him drive past in his Popemobile. Loads of people there and lovely atmosphere.

Where I live is having a party in the park today. I'm not going but have invited some friends round for a not the Jubilee barbecue. Why waste an extra day off?

The annual Gordon Bennett rally, which usually follows the original routes around Cos. Kildare, Laois and Carlow, is paying a visit to Kilkenny Castle tomorrow morning. I am helping to steward, and really looking forward to seeing these fabulous machines.

Forecast looking good too.

My oldest car, a 1972 Peugeot 504 Pininfarina Coupe is but a pup compared with many of the entrants. I am not taking part in the Rally, but I will probably bring her along to the Castle Park.

Oh definitely, never let it be said we don’t make the most of a free day off!

Have a good time. Did you sort the dog problem?

You know what Blue. I very nearly replied Lucky Fred to the above post. Ha ha. That's 2 Je suis Freds I've avoided in as many days. I must be getting good at this posting lark. ?

Only just woke up and not too great. I also invited the neighbours around for drinks later which I'll probably regret unless my hangover shifts.
You are getting the hang of that lifestyle Fred ,well done .Get them to shift a few nearly empty gin bottles for you .

I love your car ,feeling very sorry for myself watching "Bangers and cash " on ITV player thing ,so many old cars and would cost me a fortune to ship over here.

In 1981, I was on a school trip to Switzerland and Italy. On Holy Thursday, 16th April, we were in St Peter's Square, and JPII went around on the Popemobile, blessing and shaking hands. The vehicle went slowly so everyone could get a good chance to see him.

I managed to get to the front, right at a barrier. As he came from my left, I managed to shake hands with him with my left hand. Then...yes as he passed to my right I shook hands with him on my right hand.

So both of my hands have shaken hands with a Saint!!

Sadly, this close contact with crowds ended when he was shot by Ali Agca on 13rh May that year.

I was always struck by his forgiveness of Agca, going to visit him in jail in 1983, and asking people to "pray for my brother [Ağca] ... whom I have sincerely forgiven."

That's awesome.

That's awesome.

I take no credit or pride - rather it was a very humbling experience that I didn't deserve.

Like all humans JPII didn't please all the people all of the time.

However, he did more than anyone to bring the monolith of the Soviet Empire and the Eastern Bloc to an end - no violence, no threats, just his personality, his willingness to speak with anybody, and I suppose he had God on his side!!

He was the first Pope to visit the Great Synagogue of Rome (1986), and the first to visit Auschwitz. He also visited the Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem, and prayed at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. The prayer that he left at the wall was as follows:

God of our fathers, you chose Abraham and his descendants to bring your name to the nations. We are deeply saddened by the behaviour of those who, in the course of history, have caused these children of yours to suffer.

He was also the first Pope to visit a mosque (2001) and he was criticised by conservative RCs when he was seen kissing the Koran. .
