He was on the bench for the game, he should have been played. You always start with your best 11, if he needed to come off further into the game then fair enough; As it was he had to be brought in as a sub.

Last season it was working with Barry and McCarthy, our attack wasn't toothless. Barry and McCarthy together last season were brilliant, this season Barry has sadly been a liability in most games.
But if he had started the game with a tight hamstring and then made it worse, perhaps tearing it meaning he missed several games, you would have said that was a mistake as well.

All very well saying now that he could have started and been fine but Martinez wouldn't have known that - he chose to start him under similar circumatances this season and it cost us.

You cannot start your best eleven in every game, they either get exhausted and/or injured.

I'm strongly of the opinion that you should play for best 11, especially in such a crucial game. He ended up having to bring him on anyway.

I'll go back to the saying: If you're fit enough to be on the bench, then you're fit enough to play.

Why
Most clubs chop and change managers, I think after Wenger it is Rodgers who is the longest serving manager.

There is no room for sympathy in football. Tim Sherwood got Spurs within 3 points of us last season and was sacked. According to some on here you'd think Martinez had restored world peace. Football is cut throat, if you're not good enough then you're gone.
Wake up you support Everton not Chelsea, they can change managers every other year, but they will then supply the manager with funds that are mind blowing.
We need to give a manager time and we need to be patient when they make mistakes

Surely you realise we can't be cut throat as we can't afford to go down that path

If it doesn't sink in, it will never sink in

But how do you define a crucial game - we had Man United 4 days later followed S'ton and Man City. Crystal Palace at home probably looked like a game that he could afford to be rested in especially as he was carrying an injury.

Don't agree with that fit enough for the bench saying either - there is huge difference between being able to play for 20/30 minutes against already tired opposition versus 60 odd minutes versus fresh legs.

It's not just Chelsea that chop and change managers though is it?

No manager deserves a definitive amount of time if it is not working, which it isn't.

I'd define all them games as crucial. If anything the Palace game is seen as a banker, you make sure you get the points in that game and move on from there.

He would have been assessed by a team of medical professionals who passed him fit to play in that match. Had he of started I honestly don't think Palace would have put three passed us. I remember coming out of the ground and in the pub after it and everyone was asking the same question as to why he never started. Just adds up to the bizarre decisions in the FA Cup quarter final, the whole Howard/Robles fiasco in the league and the same with the Stones/Alcaraz in Europe.

When has the hire and fire approach actually worked other than when theres billions to spend.

Do you honestly think we, a) have the money to pay off roberto and his staff contracts, b)buy another manager out of his contract and members of staff to come in, c)then give them a decent kitty to spend for there own players.

And then what if the new guy doesnt perform after 12-18 months, do we rinse and repeat.

The likes of spurs can do that because they can afford all 3 options but other than them who actually does it and when does it work well?

Southampton seemed to have done alright for a club of their size. Koeman is manager number three since their return to the Premier League. Many tipped them for relegation this season after their board completely dismantled the squad.

Swansea seem to have done alright and stayed steady for a club of their size too.

But by defining them all as crucial you'd never rest/rotate/sub anybody! man City was probably the most important that McCarthy was fit to play in as Barry couldn't play due to his loan agreement.

Complaining after the fact that if only a manager had only gone with the players/formation you'd chosen he'd have won the game just strikes me as a safe criticism using perfect hindsight as you'll never be able to be proved wrong.

It's money nonetheless. I'm sure you've had a good laugh at the money spent on Balotelli, Lambert, etc.

Yeah, I have. I've laughed because they had the money to go out and buy a top drawer replacement for Suarez and even use the change and then some to buy more top players and instead bought crap.

We had the money to buy a good striker with decent potential, and bought a good striker with decent potential.

Southampton got almost 20 mil for pochettino and his team. They also got ridiculous money for just a handful of players that allowed Koeman to reinvest. Plus its his first season there, like robertos was last season.

Swansea promoted monk for free and was left an extremely settled squad and club geared up for natural progression in a certain way.

The next game is always the most important, by the time the City game had came around it was already over for us.

There are plenty of players who play consistently week in, week out. Mourinho keeps the same team, rotating only when necessary.

You asked for examples and I gave you examples. You could say it was very astute management by Southampton to get what they did. Go before him when Atkins was sacked (many questioned this decision) and was replaced by Pochettino, they didn't have a dive in form like expected.

What has happened this season, finishing 10th at best cannot be seen as acceptable. This is how declines start, we get told that 10th is a great achievement and the. The next season it becomes the same aim, you end up hapless in the league like Newcastle and Aston Villa.
