On the subject of style, it does really wind me up when certain types treat the mere suggestion that we play a little bit more direct as an act of barbarism

The most succesful Everton side of the modern era, mid to late 80's, played an aggressive and direct style of play. They didn't knock it sideways on the half way line for minutes on wend while the opposition comfortably sat back. Granted, they didn't knock it long at every opportunity either

They were a tactically flexible side, made up of a motivated group of players who were on a similar wave length

Look at Andy Gray. He was a big Scotsman who, though he was better with the ball at his feet than some suggest, mostly used his size to dominate and score goals. Watch the Semi Final with Bayern Munich of the Nat Lofthouse style goal he scored in the 84 Cup Final

This idea that to bring the glory days back we need to play Tikki Takka is nothing short of nonsense

There is nothing with us being a bit more direct. The football snobs need to stop being so stubborn about this

The mere suggestion that maybe Aaron Lennon should run down the wing and play a cross into Lukaku/Kone/Naismith does not all of a sudden make us 2008 era Stoke FFS

Haha brilliant post. People who think anything that isn't a Tesco value version of Guardiola-era Barcelona is "hoofball", give it a rest

Exactly

Precious football snobs are always waiting to decry anything that isn't that style

The continued evolution of football fourtunately means that eventually there'll be a new "correct" way to play football

I, for one, will be grateful. The snobbery around this particular style of play has become increasingly tiresome

I dont think we need a defensive coach as much as the defenders being up to it consistently.

That defence is stale and needs shaking up. Retain Robles, Stones, Jagielka and Coleman; bring in another GK, a dominant CB, and slot Garbutt in at LB. That'd solve a lot of problems we've been experiencing.

There's not enough character in that defence. It's way too brittle and needs sorting out root and branch. If we dont do that we'll fail next season. No question in my mind.

That at present is a defensive unit that should never have started out this season, never mind next.

We've scored goals at a top half of the table team rate; and conceded them at the rate of a bottom half team.

It's not fit for purpose.

My approach would be a solid keeper, keep coleman jagielka stones baines, bring in a player like barry but with more pace, mccarthy, mirallas, lennon, either barkley or kone and lukaku.

For me Martinez needs two wingers to balance the team and also help the full backs, a defensive midfielder would also help solidify the centre of the park, this year we have had one winger, in which the other sulks (mirallas) which in turn gives no protection to the full backs, which drags our central players out wide, leaving gaps in the centre exposing barry more than they should, which exposes the defence, also leaving the likes of Lukaku isolated.

Jeez this managerial lark is hard work.

Couldn't agree more. It's become a thing now where "they only wanted to play long balls" is the standard excuse for losing. Dick Advocaat being the latest example. He may as well of said "don't play direct football against us, we can't handle it".

We,ve won, were still crap and I still want him out.

It,s going to be like this for a lot of us who feel the same way for along time to come.

This, happy we won, we needed them back to back league wins, but it changes nothing about Martinez, nice guy but not good enough at Premiership management.

I voted for Roberto to be sacked and I still stand by that - at the end of the season.

This squad should easily make the top 6 and anything less is unacceptable.

He was keener on developing his media profile than preparing his team for the new season

The manager seems to be incapable of learning from his mistakes both here and at his previous club.

He has consistently picked certain players regardless of form .

He is entrenched and stubborn when it comes to how to play the game and will only play in a way that is consistent with his "philosophy".

By his own admission he has no interest in the defence ( and it shows ) and it would appear that we spend no time practicing dead ball situations.

He has failed to develop young players .

He has shown no signs of improving as a manager.

To be fair,

Christmas was the cut off for me where I considered it ridiculous that he hadn't changed the tactics yet

True that, before that we had a lot of honourable defeats and fine margins, just waiting for a lucky break to kick start the season...etc But by the end of December it was becoming obvious we came out of the games with what we deserved and nothing was being done about it.
