My approach would be a solid keeper, keep coleman jagielka stones baines, bring in a player like barry but with more pace, mccarthy, mirallas, lennon, either barkley or kone and lukaku.

For me Martinez needs two wingers to balance the team and also help the full backs, a defensive midfielder would also help solidify the centre of the park, this year we have had one winger, in which the other sulks (mirallas) which in turn gives no protection to the full backs, which drags our central players out wide, leaving gaps in the centre exposing barry more than they should, which exposes the defence, also leaving the likes of Lukaku isolated.

Jeez this managerial lark is hard work.
I know, more simply, what Martinez needs to do in this league in all but a handful of games: dispense with two deeper lying CMs. It's something I've grown to hate this season (it having been a novelty in the first season). We need to have Barkley in there with more of a destroyer/holding player.

As you say, he needs to address the FB situation too. As pointed out on MOTD last night, it looks as though he gave that some thought of late with Lennon moving inside and creating the space for Coleman yesterday to get forward. It's been a massive failure of this season that we haven't seen more of that type of problem solving where this is concerned.

"I still want him out".

I dont think I've read anything more ridiculous than that type of closed minded approach to the issue.

So, we start playing well and winning games...how does that tally with "I still want him out"?

You're not talking about some divvy who's won **** all or not put a team together here at Everton that can achieve. Short term memory supporters.

The self importance of it all too: the keyboard Caligula's, thumb hovering between up and down - as if they have a say in anything. Deprived of their kill because we've picked up the required points and going mad about it.

Unreal.

I think Barry can go really. In all honesty he has lost a half yard this season and when he's been put under more pressure he has been found wanting. I hope Martinez moves him on, as if he continues to be a definite starter I can see him developing into "Martinez's Neville" and irritating people.
Both Besic and McCarthy offer far more "legs" in that role, while as you have said Barkley and Gibson offer more creativity. I only see Barry's use being their for "big" games where his experience will help and we need an out and out stopper. I have defended Barry this season, he's not been as bad as people make out (rarely players are) but we play better without him.

I think next season we may see a move towards using a back 3 if Martinez can get a centre half in. Having a third centre back should allow for our fullbacks to push further on and mean less defensive onus on our midfield. I just don't see Barry fitting into that and I hope Martinez can move him on.

I think we should move him on at the end of the season.

Hes taken a VERY talented squad of players, that I personally feel should have challenged for the title, from the Moyes benchmark of 4th-6th and taken it to a place below Stoke City.

So thanks a lot Mr Martinez, you did ok last season, but this season you have failed on every aspect of your job as Manager of 1 of the biggest and best teams in European Football.

Anyone who cant move the ball at pace needs to find another club. Barry takes his time on the ball, so too does Naismith.

If we finally get a playmaker into this team it'll have a ripple effect further back. Barkley then becomes only an option back deeper. Martinez fights that possibility though, and that partially explains the lack of prioritising a *number 10* in his plans.

Ross Barkley? An option back deeper?

Wow. Don't think there were many who would've felt that way.

Man for man we've nothing on Chelsea or City. "On our day..." etc. is all well and good but we'd never be good enough to be consistent over 38 games.

Yes I agree. I think Martinez probably sees a number 10 playing in an "inside forward" role similar to how Maloney played for Wigan. (With the other flank being an out and out winger). He used Osman/Peinaar in this way a lot. Osman can still play this role but I doubt Peinaar can anymore. I think this is what he was hoping for Barkley to become. I am not sure Barkley has the "intelligence" to do this though.

So you are obviously left with the predicament of what to do with him. There is one possibility of playing him as a "false 9". I can't see this though. His best position is in central midfield. We need to get him on the ball as much as possible with options ahead of him. I think the best way to give cover behind him will be to have a 3rd centre back.
