January Transfer Window 2026

He literally said that he likes the height that O'Brien gives us at right back, and while he would like someone who could offer more going forwards he doesn't want to lose that height advantage.

If we don't sign a right back this January I'm going to be looking at Moyes tbh. Seems to me there are deals to be done.
Same logic when we signed Baines that saw Lescott playing left back for ages.

I understand, and it makes more sense now than it did then given our ridiculous lack of options at right back currently, but at some point you have to have full backs who are going to bring more balance to your play than what a centre back playing out wide is going to give you.

£6k a week. How's he supposed to get the bread & milk in on that sort of money. Poor lad.
Obviously in the real world it’s a lot of money . However I think we often criticise players for being greedy but Wilson backed himself to earn a place by signing a basic salary kids in the academy earn . I think personally that’s to his credit

I appreciate its rumour and speculation but I believe Moyes was close to getting rid of baines before he’d established himself in the side for this exact reason . Before baines got into the side and made the position his own .

Yeah, can obviously see the thinking that if you have no one decent to play there you may aswell play someone big and strong to strengthen the back 4.

When looking for a new right back to sign though, aerial ability is quite a bit down the list of attributes I would be looking for in a player. We need to be looking for a player with pace, dribbling and good link up play that can cross a ball.

No, that’s exactly how they want you to think. We should have deals lined up and ready to be completed before players even depart for the World Cup, there’s absolutely no excuses for our recruitment team to not be speaking to agents and clubs in the time from now until June. Stop handing them their excuses on a plate, they are bluffers and need calling out for it.
The problem is. I think agents will be reluctant to have any of their players commit to signing for someone before the world Cup. They'll want to wait and see if they have a good world Cup so they can squeeze more out of a club, both for the player and themselves.

For me it’s just his defence first mindset. There’s no other reason to want a giant at full back other than defending set peices. It’s not in his DNA to see the position as an attacking option with defensive duty, it’s very much a defender and hopefully can contribute in attack. Myko fits his MO perfectly.
Baines was ultimately good defensively and his attacking contribution too compelling for him to ignore in the end, plus he had Hibbo to tuck into a back 3 when Baines was up the pitch.

Basically everything that O'Brien isn't

The manager and the Director of Football or recruitment team need to be fully aligned on incoming players. Once compromises start being made for example, the manager getting a few of his own signings while recruitment brings in others, you end up with situations like West Ham now, or Everton over the past ten years.

Someone in their seventies saying a new way of doing things is an awful idea.
I'm shocked.

I particularly love his "in this country" aside. Does he think that foreigners who make this system work well abroad with multinational players suddenly lose the ability to make it work with multinational players as soon as they cross the Channel?

The days of the all-powerful manager are in retreat. Once Guardiola is gone - and even he is only one critical cog in that well-oiled machine - then no top club will have a Fergie or Wenger type figure dominating proceedings. Chelsea are merely leading the way - and still picking up pots as they do.
