Yeah it was a surprise to me too as someone who deals with this kind of stuff day to day haha!!

If it were that "basic" and easy then alot of the worlds logistic and traffic issues would have been solved already haha!!

Easy and basic means cheap also this stuff is not that.

I did not say it would be cheap, but 1 or 2 £Bn should cover it......

Once you leave there is no together because Ireland would still be in the EU. But sure any excuse for you to take a pop at the EU. Ireland isnt coming with you so accept that. We are a sovereign nation but we also have responsibilities and ties with the EU whtehr Britain likes it or not.
Spot on Steve, this is the bit they don't get. Their mentality is that the big bad EU is out to get them and is taking away their rights as a sovereign nation, whereas the rest of us know that the positives of being in the EU far outweigh the negatives and that is why there is a queue of countries waiting to join. What happened to the collapse of the euro that they were predicting a couple of years ago ? Instead it is sterling that has collapsed as the markets and business people know that in economic terms the decision for them to leave is a bad one. Not only that, despite the result of the referendum, it is clear that if it was held again now the result would be reversed as more people in the UK are now aware of the consequences of leaving.

It is a bad decision for Europe, for Ireland, and most of all for Britain as they are soon going to find themselves isolated. The anti EU hate from some on here is so bad that they are trying to bully us into thinking that the EU are against us and that we should join with the UK in separation.
They have another thing coming.

It must be terrible having such an inferiority complex. Don’t you worry about the U.K., we’ll do just fine on our own.......

What technology do you think it requires.....
I’ve no idea till I see what May proposes but on the basis of what’s being talked about so far, I’d imagine the first thing you’d need is a high speed fiber network running through places that hardly have broadband. You would need technology that exists for tolls to read license plates but somehow have it out of sight and indestructible. Throw in scanners for HGVs. You would need a seriously robust network spanning the whole island that can trace the movement of goods and people, something compatable with Garda and PSNI systems. This all needs to be fully automated. I would imagine you need cutting edge technology.

But it’s all available, and in my terms pretty basic.....your first point though is the real issue, how do we want it it work, what do we want it to do, what accuracy do we need etc etc., but this is all about specifying requirements, the technology even if new developments are required is fairly basic.....

Wow so rolling out a fully automated invisible international border requires basic technology in your terms??? Never mind advanced technology, what, in your terms, is intermediate technology?

Is the madness and stupidity of 100 year of breaking down barricades, only to get here to the point that some want to put a new one up not wholly visible to everyone.

The effort and the lives lost to achieve peace, only to want to put a new border, it’s the height of idocey, I hope, if not it’s nothing short of a crime against humanity.

Nothing more stupid then people sometimes.

Don’t get hung up on the descriptor. Technology either exists, is being developed or requires technology or physics breakthroughs. When I say basic, this just means that the computer, scanning, interface and communications technology exists. There will need to be lots of it and we may decide to develop to reduce costs. The hardware however does not require nuclear power (itself quite basic) or anything not currently available. The software will replicate whatever is required to operate the system. It really isn’t hard, it’s complicated, but not that complex........

I totally agree with you on this. There is no need. The politicians on all sides need to be told this......
