Exactly untill the EU agree a trade deal with the UK instead of silly demands etc how the hell do you sort Ireland out?

That's the point many of us are making to you pro brexit people. That seemingly brexiters don't seem to have a solution at all.

The difference between Britain and Ireland in relation to NI to say your example earlier about France and Switzerland is that the relationship is not the same as in Irish people in the north can if they wish hold Irish passports and therefore cannot be restricted from going south and vice versa.

You have to therefore consider immigration options for citizens based in the north. Or special exemptions. Either way you have to have some sort of idea how to police it and control it without perturbing the people

Something May and her government have never considered nor have the pro brexit people.

You cannot even use schengen as an example due to relationship issues.

When we leave there will be no freedom of movement on on a work visa basis it will be the same in all UK ports, and a
airports - not a freedom of movement as we have now get used to the idea - Ireland will have a clause were it is one country like it always had before and after the troubles - there will be no hard border!

You know that's not realistic right? How has that worked out for Australia, the US, mainland Europe or any country with no physical borders and no seemingly constructive way to stop people simply walking over its border.

Employers in certain industry's will always hire cheap labor under the table (construction, farming etc...)

In some countries they spend millions on agencies to combat this as in hunting them down and checking that companies are compliant etc...

If you are talking about special status, then the DUP will not agree to that and would bring down the May government. May has a choice give in to the DUP or honour an international treaty - the Good Friday Agreement.

As far as free movement on the island of Ireland goes. It is guaranteed under the Good Friday Agreement, that means it will still be the same as now on the island of Ireland even after the UK leaves the EU. In other words, EU citizens can enter the republic and travel to the north of the island, if they want to travel to the rest of the UK, it will be at the ports and airports in the north where they will be checked. Again the DUP are against this.

The choice for May has become very stark. No wonder the Irish want a written guarantee that there will be no border on the island of Ireland. They simply don't trust May who has said one thing on the Irish situation one minute and allowed others to say the complete opposite the next.

Tim is from Northern Ireland.

I know.

So is that Kate Hoey woman in the tweet @Ruairi77 linked.

Yet she thinks having a border between Sweden and Norway is just the same as having one running through Irish nationalist heartlands cutting through Ulster itself and separating Armagh from Monaghan or Derry from Donegal.

It ain’t.

And you would think people who come from NI would Know this......but apparently not all of them do.

It was a recipe for chaos for eighty years or so and if the DUP backwoodsmen and fanatical Tory Brexiteers get their way, will be again.

Brexit really threatens to take the whole of these islands back to the future.

Passports is the big one there. You're assuming all citizens of NI are UK passport holders.

See this is the big thing people forget about the good Friday agreement. The citizens of NI can be Irish or British if they want.

So i agree this is ultimately the biggest hurdle.

Well that and currently there are what 4 main roads that cut through the border and then back from north to south. Effectively putting borders on roads that begin in the republic cross in NI and then back into the Republic would be difficult.

The BBC did a great video discussing this a while back.

Not forgetting the farmers who own land on both sides.

yea, there are some 300 crossing points and that's before you consider private land that crosses the border.

Tick rock this Irish border issue is going to be like a soap opera for the next 6 months!

Old Redneck Sammy Wilson is already out with the age old Unionist Threat to stamp their feet.

How will any hard border patrol deal with the passport issue? I hold an Irish passport. I've lived in NI all my life. Will I be treated as an EU citizen or a UK citizen at the border?

About 40-50% of my work is in the ROI. Will a hard border mean stops for every vehicle? If so, let's say it takes 1 minute to check credentials, if there are 30 cars that's a 30-minute wait (anyone who's driven on the the A1/M1 to Dublin knows that a 30 car queue is conservative).

If it's not feasible to put border checks on every road, will they resort to craters and blockades like they did during the troubles? If they do that, it's a certainty that the IRA will resurface and people will get killed. And if the IRA resurfaces the various loyalist groups will resurface too.

This whole situation is an absolute clusterf**k of c**twittery.
