It’s not a case of disregarding unionists. The people of NI will determine what happens there. Either they will remain within the U.K., become an Independent Country or merge with the ROI. It’s their choice, not mine, but will I hope be done democratically. If they remain in the U.K., no problem we will continue as is, if the people vote to become an independent country I would hope that the U.K. and ROI do everything to help them, if they wish to be part of the ROI, and the ROI wants that, then they can get on with it. The U.K. can offer to bring those unionists who do not wish to be part of the ROI to the U.K. , but it’s their choice. However, once it’s done then it’s done and the new Ireland stands on its own two feet…….
Agree that Unionists werent disregarded at all. They were played like a fiddle from the outset and the DUP bigotry was exploited to the maximum.

That the DUP couldn’t see how this would turn out, when even political amateurs on here could, will be to their eternal embarrassment. They ignored the lessons from history and got what they worked hard for in the end.

I meant disregarded in the sense that the Brexit movement went in to hyper patriot mode, union jack hats, sunglasses and any/everything else. A unionist wet dream. But at the end of the day, the only way they could have this is if the unionists didnt get the same level of autonomy and independence from the EU that the rest of the UK has. And most brexit voters from GB were fine with that.

I understood your point completely a chara. Unionism was played and it was their wishes/expectations that were disregarded to ensure GB got their Brexit.

Unionists definitely were not disregarded. They voted the majority party in the assembly, who propped up the tories, who were pro brexit. Reaping what they sow.

I was reading today that when Alex Maskey, Sinn Fein, became Lord Mayor of Belfast in 2002, he was the first Lord Mayor not to have a deputy because the unionist partys refused to have a deputy to a Sinn Fein Mayor. Similar to their refusal to have a Sinn Fein First Minister, regardless of the reasons they have tried to portray.

Unionist supremacy in the north is over.100 years ago this 'Country' was set-up for perpetual unionist dominance, civil rights were denied to Irish nationalists. The tide has turned, through democracy, i have no sympathy for unionism.

If Unionists fully embrace their Britishness then they must accept the will of the majority and subject themselves to the ballot box. Surely a pillar of Britishness is an adherence to democracy. The only forum where the DUP are the biggest party is in Westminster, the up coming General Election may well change that. If Sinn Fein do return more MPs than any other party then what does that say for the United Kingdom, a sizeable proportion of the Scots don’t want to be part of the UK and we have a First Minister in a devolved system who is a republican, is it time to change the name of the place to the Disunited Kingdom?

Well done Ms O'Neill. Good to see normality beginning to reign in political relations now that the dup has picked up its toys.
Gerry Adams set the Sinn Fein strategy out years ago:

"And what’s going to break them is equality. That’s what’s going to break them: equality. Who could be afraid of equality? Who could be afraid of treating somebody the way you want to be treated. That’s what we need to keep the focus on; that’s the Trojan horse of the entire republican strategy."
