Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

yup, in the year or so leading up to the referendum I argued a lot abut this with Pete. Think there was no. CA section at the time, it was in the Ale house. I pointed out that there was no plan for the land border on the Island of Ireland. But he didn't care. I was amazed how quickly the patriotic nationalist brexiteers threw the unionists under the bus in order to make Brexit happen.
Now theres a two tiered UK and the vast majority of English people could not give one hoot about NI

In this case it works out for NI who get a great economic deal.

Now come on, I did agree that the NI issue was not raised during the run up to the vote and that people hadn’t considered it. Also if you remember, I also said that appropriate computer systems and processes could be put in place to ensure uninterrupted passage…and afterwards I argued that NI would end up with the best of both worlds……

i dont think there is a major problem with them accepting a nationalist majority in the assembly or nationalist 'first minister' seeing they have now agreed to go back.
but yeh the one part of the article i had an issue with was him trying to apportion some of the blame to Dublin when it was all of the tories and DUPs own making.
Have you met them? They are the Trumpers of Europe.

well, partly.
You also fervently argued that NI should be solely in the UK market.
You argued that a system of satellites would manage the border and that this would enable NI to stay solely in the UK market.

NI is in the U.K. and should be in the U.K. market. Technology could easily manage the cross border issues. But let’s not revisit old arguments. If this works well for NI I couldn’t be more pleased for them…….

What about the Unionists who have to compromise as opposed to you who does not?

Blows my mind how quickly the English are willing to disregard the unionists.

Great posts.

Firstly I think history shows that England will always abandon Irish unionists when push comes to shove.

Secondly on Brexit the issue is that Northern Ireland highlights all the gory mess in such a way that the gammon mob can only opt to look away and not face facts - Brexit makes the UK poorer and trade more difficult

The biggest irony Northern Ireland literally did have the fabled Brexit cake which it could also consume but DUP a key member Conservative and Unionist party spat it out in disgust.

It’s not a case of disregarding unionists. The people of NI will determine what happens there. Either they will remain within the U.K., become an Independent Country or merge with the ROI. It’s their choice, not mine, but will I hope be done democratically. If they remain in the U.K., no problem we will continue as is, if the people vote to become an independent country I would hope that the U.K. and ROI do everything to help them, if they wish to be part of the ROI, and the ROI wants that, then they can get on with it. The U.K. can offer to bring those unionists who do not wish to be part of the ROI to the U.K. , but it’s their choice. However, once it’s done then it’s done and the new Ireland stands on its own two feet…….

if only mone and co could have to face the reality of standing on their own two feet, instead of standing on the trachea of the poorest and most vulnerable the country has made. heroes and heroines. rule britannia, britannia rules the waves.

This is a reasonably serious thread about NI, if you have a contribution excellent, if all you are going to do is go on about Mone,Tories, Covid money then find another relevant thread……
