Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

But it won’t be the U.K. that puts one in place. The EU however have come out today to say there will be one. Personally I think this is a clumsy attempt by the EU to put the frighteners on Dublin and soften them up prior to a relaxation/ change to the backstop. This would allow Mays deal to go through and the EU to receive £39Bn. But who knows......

Please, for the last time get this into your head, Pete:

THE UK WILL HAVE TO HAVE HARD BORDERS IN THE CASE OF A NO-DEAL IF THEY WISH TO TRADE UNDER WTO RULES.

I live in the North of Ireland, I’m British having served in the Royal Navy & the Army. I don’t want anything to do with the south, those of who do have murdered my friends.

Hey Jeff,

Ever thought of loading up that Ferrari with your belongings and getting on a boat to anywhere in Britain never to return ?

Because that's where you belong if you're not prepared to live on this island in mutual cooperation and respect with the rest of us.

You may as well bang your head against the wall. He is playing a little game of 'whoever blinks first gets the blame' while knowing very well that both parties for differing reasons will have to have a border in place. In true Brexiteers fashion he will blame the EU/Ireland when the fact is that there is only one party to blame for this whole sorry mess. It would be laughable if the consequences weren't so tragic.

This is it. I've talked to remainers who are wishing a hard brexit on the UK so that Brexiteers will see the error of their ways. I've always said, though, that it won't play out that way.

If we remain after a second vote, they'll blame the 'elites,' 'leftists' and the UK government for not listening to the will of the people.
If we have a soft Brexit they'll blame the EU for shafting us on the deal.
If we have no deal and the economy tanks, they'll blame the EU for it as well.

Everyone will be to blame but themselves.

Pete is the person who keeps posting in various threads about how he hates that politics has become about taking sides and what a mess it is in various countries.

The mad thing is thats what he does all of the time.

Despite the many facts that come his way he will deny them, points fingers or makes a smart comment about something or other.

It's pointless debating him. Push him enough he will tell you how clever and worldly he is and you are stupid in comparison.

He (or any of the Brexiteer posters) have refused to answer my simple question on 'the will of the people' and democracy relating to another referendum, for example.

They are not against a hard border.
And there's a big difference between having some skin in the game and being king makers.
If the DUP did not control the UK government, there would be an agreement in place for NI to remain in both the UK and the common market. And Brexit would be proceeding with little fuss while the people of Britain went about their lives with their usual zero interest in the day to day workings of N.Ireland.

Not quite, as Scotland would be crying why the NI gets special privileges. This would lead to questions with a far greater risk to the union than what happens with NI and brexit.

I also can't see how the Irish PM can say it will stay open either, as in the end that might lead to Ireland being asked to leave the EU if they have no control of a border with an outside territory. If everyone was happy to have an open border there wouldn't be a backstop to talk about.

You need to clarify this.

You seem to be calling everyone who lives south of the border murderers.

Very narrow minded of you Jeff and the reason there is tension in some quarters.

Claiming everyone south is to blame for the IRA and the troubles is utterly ridiculous.

It would be like all of us claiming that anyone that serves in the British Army is a murderer seen as some of them were no angels either. See where i am going Jeff.

Times have changed, people have changed and holding grudges like this is why there are issues. Labeling an entire nation murderers for the action of a few is mad.

There you go, steriotyping. Most of the killings have come from the south or southern wanting people’s.

It might be better if you took an extra few seconds in composing your posts before hitting the "post reply" button... in order that you don't make blanket statements such as this that suggests everyone south of the border are murderers.
A. it patently isn't true
B. it's offensive to any number of our forum members who are either Irish themselves or have Irish ancestry.
Err roller wanting to be part of the south have committed most killings. Check your facts my friend.

Sadly for you Jeff, almost half tthe population in the north of Ireland take a different view.

And as that percentage is growing at a rate of knots you might just have to suck it up sooner than you would like to, old son.
That may be true, but was it 40 years ago? Think on that.
