To be fair now there was atrocities committed by, british forces in the north as well, not to mention the atrocities committed by loyalist paramilitaries.Who in many cases, such as the Loughisland massacre, and the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, were operating in collusion with british security forces. Now im no fan of the IRA, or physical force republicanism. But there is that saying, it takes two to tango.Yes you democratically voted to leave the EU.But i think neither yourself or @RichardP appreciate what a powder keg, the north of this island is.We've had 21 years of peace thank god.And we'd like to keep it that way.

And I totally agree and hope it remains so.....

Is it a coincidence that IRA activities on the British mainland ended after 9/11, do you think ? Er, I came here to find out what 'Irish backstop' is, not to read
about this stuff, but the thought occurred to me, again.

No.

IRA activity ended with the Good Friday Agreement, some three yesrs earlier.

Since Jeff talks about the mainland the last actual attack I can think of by the ira , rather than a splinter group , on the mainland was Manchester in 1996.

There was a ceasefire in 1994 , relapses, crisis and talks from then leading to the GFA in 1998 as khal has rightly said a couple of years before 9/11.

EU still holding firm in its support for the Irish backstop:

'We are all Irish for the moment' - EU awaits Brexit plan

Belgium's Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said the European Union was still waiting for Brexit proposals from London. "We are all Irish for the moment," Mr Reynders also told reporters of the bloc's unity with Ireland on the contentious issue of the Irish border after Brexit.

Austria's foreign minister has distanced the EU from a suggestion by her Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz that the backstop could be limited to five years to allow a deal to pass the UK Parliament. Karin Kneissl said she had spoken to Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels yesterday and he made it clear "Ireland belongs to the 27" and "anything that was negotiated by commissioner Michel Barnier was part of the position that Ireland was part of".

She added: "We were all taken by surprise when the Polish minister made his statement. "We have had cohesion and we wish to continue having cohesion on the EU 27 position, so the statement by our Polish colleague came as a surprise, but I don't believe that it will cause some sort of breakthrough, certainly not because if we start having all kinds of bilateral suggestions it doesn't lead us anywhere."

Over to you Teresa, again.

Hardly in the same sense as it is for us residing on the island of Ireland. Most people in Britain couldn't give two f£%*s about NI or Ireland as shown by brexiteer disregard for the GFA and a soft border in Ireland.

So how have you reacted to the EU’s comments that a no deal will result in a hard border. Looks like your mates in the EU don’t care either...

I dont like seeing this type of statement, it's not an Irish issue it is a UK issue with an EU border.

But it won’t be the U.K. that puts one in place. The EU however have come out today to say there will be one. Personally I think this is a clumsy attempt by the EU to put the frighteners on Dublin and soften them up prior to a relaxation/ change to the backstop. This would allow Mays deal to go through and the EU to receive £39Bn. But who knows......

In my simple mind, its plainly obvious that a no deal exit will create a hard border, in theory at least. Cos otherwise, there would have been a deal, of sorts.
