Howard or Robles in Goal against Arsenal in FA Cup

Not really arsed what happened with Wigan last season. We're 90 minutes away from Wembley and a chance of a good draw in the semi's. To not play Howard would be [Poor language removed] outrageous.

What is it with this bollocks anyway, you wouldn't drop other key players to play the second string. Daft.

Because other players get more opportunities than a second string keeper does, who is almost always on the bench except for in cup games.

Laughing.

Didn't work at all for Wigan when Martinez played their second choice keeper in the Cup, did it.

Well, this isnt true...is it?

He dropped Al Habsi for the league AND the cup. Robles was their number one keeper for the back end of the season.

League Apps - 9
Cup Apps - 4

So you're missing the point. Howard IS our undisputed number 1, so therefore why wouldnt we play him now we are playing against a top side?

The priority of this football club is to win games and trophies. Nobody should be arsed in the slightest about the lack of minutes for a back up goalkeeper. We wouldn't dream of dropping Tim for the games against the likes of Arsenal in the league. [Poor language removed] him, play the best team possible obviously. It's utterly bizarre.

Well yes it is true isn't it. Second string keepers rarely play except in cup competitions, Al Habsi being dropped because he was performing badly is such an exception.

This season in the league Howard has been the keeper throughout, Robles' only chances have come in cup games. That proves the point entirely.

Martinez isn't just looking at the short term of playing the best player every single game, he's also casting his eye toward the future, and no player will develop unless they get game time.

Nobody complained about Ross Barkley getting chances last season even when his performances were occasionally poor, because they knew he needed time on the pitch. This is no different for Robles.

There's also the argument that Robles has been responsible for us getting to this cup quarter final so he deserves to keep his place, he's not made any big errors in the FA Cup to date has he ?

Yeah, and not to mention the difference in quality between Hoawrd/Robles and Al Habsi/Robles. Tim is by far our best keeper, to drop him for this would be scandalous.

Your original point, in a sarcastic tone, was that it wasnt a problem for Martinez to play his second string keeper for the cup games because, in the end, he won the FA Cup.

But Robles wasnt his second string keeper. He was his number 1.

So im sorry, I repeat with respect, the example you have used to illustrate your point isnt a valid one.

So you reckon throwing Robles in goal for what is probably our biggest game of the season is a good idea, just to develop him? Brilliant.

No, it wasn't.

He wouldn't be throwing him in goal, it would be consistent with what has occurred so far this season, which is allowing Robles to play in cup games to improve him as a player.

You think that Robles development is paramount then? More important than Everton getting to Wembley and in with a shot of winning our first trophy in how many years? Strange, in my opinion.

No, and i've never suggested such a thing.

If i thought player development was paramount then Distin wouldn't start a single game for the rest of the season, it would be Stones all day long.

I simply don't see the big deal in playing a keeper who has proved himself in cup competitions both for us and Wigan, to the point where he performed brilliantly in the FA Cup final last season and walked away with a winners medal as a result.

Some of you are acting like Howard is Manuel Neuer. He's our best keeper and is probably more consistent but he's certainly not immune to mistakes.

Question for you, whats Howard done to think if he starts its a significant boost to our chances, whats Robles done to make you so sure he will cost us the game?

Laughing.

Is this not slightly sarcastic? Saying one thing but implying the opposite to be true?

And... at which part of this are you not saying that Wigan, under Martinez, played their "second choice keeper in the cup"? Because above, quoted from you, you say 'Martinez played their second choice keeper in the cup..."

Anyway, im not interested in petty squabbles, I just thought you were wrong, and I still do. Martinez didnt play his second choice keeper in the cup, he played his number 1 - Joel Robles.

Kept a clean sheet for wigan at Goodison in the quarters kept a clean sheet at wembley vs a full strength man city squad in the final... conceded one goal in 3 games in the cup this year, howard making a disastrous error in the last game, getting beaten by spurs one shot on target in another high pressure game a whilst before... sorry don't see it as a problem and dont see it as something that would harm our chances in the cup to play robles
