This whole situation is a massive mess and it's sad to see. The blinkers football fans have when it comes to rival players and their own are incredible. Both sides. Some of the stuff I've seen and read is just unbelievable.
My take on all of the matters - as impartial as I possibly can be (as someone who was at the game and initially peed myself when Holgate launched Firmino into the stand...)
1.
The push. Holgate definitely should have received a card and it should have been a free kick. I'm not sure - genuinely - if it was a open and shut red card offence. I've seen players sent off for less, and booked for more. I'd much sooner see Holgate red carded for that than Niasse be banned two games for what he did, for example. So first of all, no messing, Holgate is bang to rights for what he did, and I think some sort of retrospective action - give that the ref didn't punish it at all in the game - would be fair enough. I'd certainly not complain.
2.
The alleged racism. No-one knows yet what the precise allegation is from Holgate. We only have a lip reading of him telling Madley "I actually thought he called me n*****", or words to that effect. We can see Firmino clearly swearing at Holgate in Portuguese, but the final part of his rant - the bit that Holgate actually goes nuts at - is fully obscured by Jonjoe Kenny's head. As such, then, no-one can accuse Firmino categorically of being a racist, and no-one can accuse Holgate categorically of making a false allegation. We will just have to see. what the referee's report says and whether there is any other way of being certain of what was said. I can't see there being a clear outcome. Most likely - if no-one else can back up Holgate's claim - that it's one man's word against another's, and they'll just have to call it quits. If Holgate does admit that he misheard Firmino then an apology will very much be in order but I don't think retrospective action should be taken against Holgate - as this would send completely the wrong message to anyone else about coming forward if they feel they've been abused.
3.
Playing the race card. The suggestion that Holgate made a deliberate false accusation is interesting, but highly unlikely in my opinion (it is only an opinion). It's also utterly unprovable. Personally I think he'd have to be an incredibly clever person and a stunningly good actor to have come up with that and act it out so convincingly on the spur of the moment. Best case scenario - he's heard Firmino wrongly. Worst case, Firmino has said something dodgy. Let's not muddy the waters with false accusation nonsense. Those who say he shouldn't have reported it if he wasn't sure, I fully disagree with. If someone thinks they've been racially abused, are we seriously suggesting they should keep it to themselves just on the off chance they might have misheard?
4.
Homophobic tweets. It strikes me as incredibly petty that Liverpool fans have gone to these lengths to try and tarnish Holgate by searching through tweets that are years old. But we are where we are. Frankly, the tweets have absolutely zero to do with this particular situation. They are an entirely separate issue. My own view is that they are not comparable to the Andre Gray tweets, for two reasons:
1. Andre Gray was 20 when he sent his offensive tweets. Mason Holgate was 15. He was a child in the eyes of the law.
2. Andre Gray's tweets were directed to no-one in particular but contained extreme and offensive views. He actually tweeted that gay people should "burn", "die" and that they made him "sick". Highly offensive. Mason Holgate was having a conversation with a mate and used some slang terms for gay people - namely "faggot" and "battyboy". Clearly not great, but hugely different in context to Andre Gray. I'd be shocked if he gets in real trouble for this. Clearly they are ill-advised and offensive to some extent, but are nowhere near on the level of Gray.
Just my tuppence worth. It will be really interesting to see how this all pans out.
Suffice to say, I've seen far worse things said by fans of both teams on Twitter/forums than ANYTHING either Holgate or Firmino have been accused of. Some people genuinely need to look at themselves, evaluate their priorities, and get a chuffing life.
