No, actually.

McClean observed the minute's silence. He showed basic decency for the feelings of others, when we can all reasonably assume he's probably quite anti-monarchist and may have strong convictions on this topic. I think he deserves praise for his actions.

Not for me - yes he observed the minutes silence but thats hardly something to be praised for. He decided to make it all about him again standing seperate to his team mates.

I can't respect a man who made his living in a country he quite clearly detests.

Maybe it boils down to how much live TV an individual watches? I don't tend to view much live, so maybe my natural viewing habits mean I'm less likely to watch BBC1 and ITV in the first place. Someone who's habits differ, veering towards often watching BBC1 and ITV a fair bit more, is probably experiencing a rather different level of "intrusion".

The shopping issue - not an issue. The shops are open seven days a week, so go on Sunday or Tuesday. No imposition at all. Don't huge numbers of people shop online anyway?

Ditto entertainment. I'm sure everyone can wait a day to go to the cinema, or go a day early.

Others on here have raised points about the NHS cancelling some appointments, and I agree entirely that this is a very undesirable state of affairs. I'm not advocating a national shut down of everything.

Your point about it being straightforward is really interesting, because I agree with you but nevertheless we reach different conclusions. As a social observation, this event shines a light on the fact that "normal" and "straightforward" don't mean the same thing to everyone, which is fascinating in itself.

I don't watch TV at all personally but it is going a bit far to have it on every channel that a company owns. Not only is it overkill it's weird. The funeral and all the lead up etc absolutely should be on BBC 1 and ITV but it does not need to be on their sub channels too. Nothing wrong with putting some re-runs on (or normal TV for them) so that those who choose not to be involved in all this at least have something else to watch or do. A lot of people are set in their ways, some people don't have other options etc.

It won't really affect me personally at all. I don't watch telly, tend to go shopping at weird hours to avoid a crowd and barely leave the house most days!

Did he call the mail and ask them to publicise it? Or do you think he would have been quite happy to just follow his conscience and get on with the game?

How does he detest the country? He quite clearly likes the country he just does not like some aspects of it (like the Monarchy, like the atrocities that happened to his own people etc) and is open and honest enough within himself to admit to that.

Also he is allowed to make a living in the UK as he is a UK citizen.

We pay about 70p each a year towards the monarchy, less tax than litre of petrol
Well all chip in another 70p for me and my lot.

Is that directly from our tax pot? Does that include tax that they don't pay that the rest of us have to?

Plus Buckingham Palace gets about 500k visitors per year. Versailles 10 million. Not really an argument for bringing in the tourists.

We shouldn't have to pay anything though. 70p from each person is an awful lot of money. I wouldn't mind it...

It's worse as they don't even need it. That 70p could go elsewhere. I know it would go on something else as equally stupid because that's the nation and the times we live in but still doesn't make it right.

And atrocities have happened to our own people at the hands of **his** people. We are mature enough to rise above all that though.

Mclean hides behind historical events to legitimise his prejudice against the English yet he's made his millions off the English footballing system.

He's both a hypocrite and an unsavoury character imo.

I think its ridiculous. Corporates and organisations in the public sphere seem to be absolutely scared witless that the cancel culture vultures will take aim at them for doing the "wrong" thing, even if its only very, very slightly wrong by perception. So they respond in this fashion with completely blanket, overblown, and illogical gestures in the other extreme.

The service is going to be carried on all of the national terrestrial networks, and news channels, as is to be expected. There is nothing wrong with someone wanting to do something else entirely whilst it is in progress, whether that's walking the dog or watching a movie or sport on TV. It's forced groupthink and very immature and unhealthy in any society.

And that is 70p more than they are worth!!
Not for me! 70p for an institution that has prosided over this country for over a thousand years, and has been responsible for so much that we take for granted both good and bad. It just feels like a bunch of cocky kids wanting to do away with everything in the blink of an eye.
I do not want them to have any say politically but, as an historic entity, I pay a lot more than 70p to keep them.

The tourist argument is nothing to me. It is about 1000 years of history. Do away with the Royals and then what?? Nothing. Great, pointless really.

Send me 70p and you can pay my share!!
