What I don’t understand is why we didn’t sign him at that point. We went and bought Rohl instead. Ipswich agreed a £20 million deal but he turned them down, so surely wasn’t a prohibitive fee..

It takes two to tango... he's a popular figure on Teesside, and he's a local lad, so maybe he fancied one more crack at getting to the PL with them?

It feels inevitable. Can’t see him coming here if there’s actual competition considering we don’t have any form of European football as a sweetener.

He’d have to be guaranteed a starting spot in his preferred position or be paid loads to compensate.

Don't think this is *really* true, there wouldn't have been enough time to get it done in a couple of days before these other clubs entered the picture

Liverpool and United don't make a lot of sense for him as he won't play there enough, but Brighton would be a problem for us

Gana Gueye - 36
Garner - played almost every minute of football last year.
KDH - plays as number 10
Alcaraz - likely to be sold
Armstrong - likely to be loaned
Rohl - Moyes utility option.

And Tim 'the new Vieira' Iroegbunam.

So in reality we have 4 CMs - 1 who can pass (Garner), a 36 year old, Rohl who fills gaps and an Elite midfield force in Iroegbunam.

I think another who can do Garners role would be hugely helpful where we need to break teams down.

Hackney would fit that profile.

I standby that. On the ball he was. Gueye’s awful at retaining possession and most of the time is making a hash of simple sideways and backwards passing.

It's been ENTIRELY my point from the off - we just got caught up in peripheral stuff like comparison of current CMs and Hackney.

Midfielders are falling out of the cupboards at Finch Farm.

Strikers and full backs change our fortunes...even under Moyes.

Bobble stating the club see him as one for the future. Not an immediate starter.

WTF are they doing? More stockpiling of midfielders when they should be straight out of the traps securing a RB and CF(s).

But what do we do? "Let's get another centre-midfielder in for the future".

It's calamitous, and just underlines that the lunatics have taken over the asylum at that club.

The bigger point you dont address: do we desperately need another CM to sit on the bench and wait their turn or do we desperately need to do other things this window?

My point was a lot simpler than that: WTF are they doing spending cash on another bench warmer in a position we are relatively well off in when the necessity is FBs and CFs?

The fact he's 23 means nothing to me; the fact that he's not been taken immediately and Boro are struggling to sell him sets a few alarms bells.

Stats-wise: at Championship and League Two level he's played 5 seasons and scored 13 and assisted 16 goals.

That's not exactly ripping it up even down there. The PL clubs have maybe swerved this lad for a reason?

Ok, that's a good way of looking at it. Talent is there at that level and if we were being offered the best young RB in the Championship then I'd be relaxed about all this. But we're not. We'd be taking a punt on another bench warming centre-midfielder.

This whole thing feels like a way of pacifying a frustrated and unimpressed fanbase. A few sweets bought for kids at the checkout to avoid kick offs.

I have zero faith in Moyes or the rest of the Extraordinary Operators conducting our transfer business. It looks like arbitrary purchasing of players rather than a proper plan.
