Why do you not think he had a fair trial?

Chauvin was released pre-trial on bond so he was able to go onto state his case at trial without having opt for a plea bargain to escape pretrial prison conditions

He had two experienced and professional private lawyers who could concentrate on his case rather than relying on overworked public defenders juggling multiple cases or worse

The judge not only set aside three weeks for voir dire but allowed detailed questionnaires (not always used as I understand it), a greater than usual jury pool
and also gave far more leeway in striking jurors

Compared to your average jury this one was vetted far more rigorously, that probably applies to the evidence presented as well.

Urm the media frenzy surrounding it. Crowds in the streets during the trial. Senior politicians and even the president saying he should be found guilty. A member of jury now known to have taken part in a BLM protest prior to the trail?

I couldn’t care less if he gets life imprisonment by the way..

The last one I agree may mean that there is a retrial, although by US standards one juror out of twelve having pretrial assumptions of the defendants guilt or innocence is probably not unusual, as I say very few juries get the scrutiny that this one did.

And unless they were the reincarnation of Henry Fonda https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_Angry_Men_(1957_film) it is also debatable on how much they actually changed the eventual outcome.

I don't think the other aspects mean it was an unfair trial especially given the unusual allowances that were made for the defendant and his lawyers to correct any bias. For what its worth I think Biden was stupid to open his big mouth but since the jury was already sequestered when he did it that can't have impacted the result at all.

The trail should have also been moved out of the state. By keeping it where it was has probably added slightly more weight to his appeal.

I can't think of any high profile murder trials that were moved out of state but do recall at least one that changed cities as we were in the catchment area for the new jury pool.

Didn't do Peterson much good and given Floyd's death was also a national news story probably wouldn't have made any practical difference to verdict although as you say might have removed one argument that the defense will use on appeal.

Edit a more relevant example is the offices involved in the beating of Rodney King - the change of venue did probably help them

The amount of lads itching for Chauvin to go free because of their hatred of BLM is sad to see imo
Thats just it.

The only ones wanting a retrial are those who lean on the side of wrong.

Their attempts to claim it was unfair and illegal are strenuous and daft.

The lengths people go to ignore facts to repeat a point.

Chauvin has good attorneys and so far all they are protesting are technical issues. Not one thing they are appealing is anything anyone who has cried found has mentioned here. Which is all stuff brought up by the right wing and internet weirdos.

Amazing how when high profile cases of black men and women we never hear any of these unfair claims from the same people.

Indeed. These people reveal themselves so readily

They all seem to have the same opinion of George Floyd as well.
“He was a criminal, he shouldn’t have resisted, he was on drugs” etc.

Completely forgetting that the police have a duty of care once you are in their custody, regardless of who you are or your history. It’s sickening to see people essentially praise the police for acting as judges and executioners because it fits their world view.

On the flip side, it is worth noting the difficulty of maintaining a fair trial for Chauvin with the publicity around it. But it is what it is and it was right that the trial went ahead.

Judge has played it right down the middle. 15 was the accepted minimum, prosecution called for 30.

Think it’s probably fair. He’s taken into account the aggravating factors and has extended the sentence accordingly. He’ll probably be out in 15 by which time he’ll be about 60 and they won’t be an easy 15 years given he will be a cop in prison. A lot of time in solitary coming his way. I’m not going to feel sorry for him though.

Anyway, hopefully the Floyd family feel like they have received justice. And hopefully certain cops in the US will now realise they cannot act outside of the law and expect to get away with it.
