The gender pay gap as it is often presented is a myth.

When you compare men and women in equivalent roles with the same level of experience the gender pay gap is less than 0.5%.

The 9% figure touted by many is simply a comparison of the median earnings of men vs women. This does nothing to account for the roles that men and women are doing or choose to do.

Those differences in career choice are less likely to be found between races so it’s likely that any pay gap is far more troubling and is likely discriminatory at its core.
What you are referring to is equal pay. Equal pay law means that you need to be paid the same for the same job, same experience etc.

the gender pay gap isn’t about men and women not being paid the same for the same work.

It’s there because females are underrepresented in management and director roles.

in financial services the gender pay gap is c30%.

its about lack of representation. There are loads of reasons for it and to be honest using that industry as an example, you could even draw a line straight back to toys as a possible factor. But that’s probably for a different thread!

You’re not born a racist. It’s learned behaviour, to glibly say there’ll always be racists, so we should just try and pretend it’s not still a societal issue is bollocks. Education is the key, as we need to stop the cycle repeating.

Noted that you ignored the salient part of my post btw.
I have to disagree with you. In my view, racism is an intrinsic primeval instinct in us, originating in humans being territorial animals.
It is easy to develop and feed on, difficult to eradicate although it can be by education.

To be fair it is equal pay fella.

I’m just saying that the gender pay gap isn’t a myth.

I’m saying that equal pay and the gender pay gap are two different things.

that the gender pay gap does exist and that it’s about representation.

I’m aware of the difference between the gender pay gap and equal pay laws, you don’t need to educate me. I’m not sure you really grasped the point i was making.

The gender pay gap is regularly presented as being evidence of gender discrimination within the workplace in general. It does nothing to take into account the different career paths that men and women may choose to take of their own volition.

The point I was making, was that this difference in career decision making is far less likely to present itself across races as it is across genders. There is plenty of evidence to suggest women and men will align to different careers when they are given equal opportunity, I don’t believe there is evidence of this across different races.
Which is why a pay gap such as the one being discussed between black and white people is far more troubling.

I did grasp it. I know what you are saying. I’ve looked into this a lot. Discrimination across genders is a broad topic covering lots of areas which is why I mentioned toys. We shouldn’t get into it here as it’s about race.

(It was centered around choice of career path, what influences it. It was to do with toys and social ‘norms’, demographics of people studying maths, maternity/paternity policies and financial services industry).

Arguing for equality of opportunity is fine.

Arguing for equality of outcome is dangerous and nonsensical.

Also why is it that whenever people talk about the gender pay gap it’s always concerning roles that are very well paid. WE NEED MORE FEMALE CEO’S! Ok, great I agree. What about firefighters? Janitors? Bin collectors? Delivery drivers? Taxi drivers?

The notion that at any given time at any workplace, the staff will be split 50/50 (then you throw in other massively key factors like race) is just insane. You can extend this to society as a whole.

If I’ve read you wrong and it’s equality of opportunity you’re championing then we’re on the same page. Equality of outcome is ludicrous.

Jordan Peterson called. He wants his lines back.

George Floyd’s death and the violent aftermath has prompted questions about what sort of world we live in. If we live in a liberal world that Christianity makes possible, George Floyd’s death is a singular transgression, which law can and will punish. George Floyd was a person. So, too, was the policeman who killed him. Persons are protected by the law; and those persons granted policing authority by the liberal state have a somber responsibility to use their vested authority to protect persons rather than to harm them. That is why the death of a civilian by police hands will always attract attention. The same original sin that is the basis for establishing the category of persons is also the reason why a policing force must be vigilantly watched.

What if we do not live in a liberal world that Christianity makes possible? What if, under the pretext of liberalism and Christianity, America is still pagan? That is, what if America has always been a white nation, and still is? This is the position of many on the American left today. It is a position that holds that the black man, George Floyd, and the white police officer responsible for his death, are representatives of blood nations, not singular persons. The murder of one by the other is representative of the collective murder of one people by the other. American law cannot bring about justice, because each blood nation has its own justice, from which marginalized blood nations can never benefit. American law is white law. Street vengeance, therefore, is the only recourse—whether we call them protests or riots. White people must die, as a just exchange for the black people who have died.
