General strike/protest

wont happen because the country is so fractured. If there is a protest , it will more than likely be hijacked by rent a mob and that will deflect the attention of what the protest was originally about.

I simply don't believe that last bit by the way. For instance, I attended a pitch event last week where these guys were presenting

http://avalonai.com/

Academics from Cambridge and Brussels respectively. They created a startup, they weren't working in the NHS. Universities spin-out ventures all the time, and I can't think of a single instance whereby the NHS 'buy' them. In this general field you've got IBM doing some tremendous things in radiology, the Avalon team having a go at dementia and, as mentioned above, Google working on kidney health. These are some of the smartest minds in the country. I really don't see why you would object to them turning their energy to healthcare simply because of who pays their wages.

I object to their parasitical nature being thinly disguised as altruistic projects when they're nothing of the sort. R&D in fields where they receive a certain extra kudos because of the nature of their research...Research that will no doubt be used to make a profit in future.

They got their world wide web on the back of REAL altruism, and have profited, thieved and hoarded to become what they are today.

And yes, I AM a hypocrite because I have an android 'phone, and use google chrome.

And you think its's right that I should subsidise THEM to undertake such research? GTFOOI. They'd make enough moolah to do it anyway, even if they paid their full tax dues in every individual country they operate in.

What are you on about? They're not investing in DeepMind out of altruism or the driverless technology or in giving you that free browser/operating system/search engine/email/video platform/mapping and so on.

But, you know, the only way they'll make a profit is if they're actually useful to people. If people voluntarily hand over their money to them because they perceive their services to be valuable enough then what on earth is the problem with that?

oh, hello comrade ;)

Not sure whether making it a worker based 'strike' is a good idea. It ought to be a citizen based protest that takes priority over 'work'.
Yeah the protest here is key rather than a strike seeing how this lot have forced millions into zero hours and barely feasible self employment.
I think the levels of anger out there may surprise some people.
