It seems much fairer to expect someone who will earn considerably more than average over their lifetime to foot the bill for the education that gave them that income

But let's not forget that the reason people resorted to such desperate and unpleasant means, was because a small group of people treated the majority of the population like slaves for centuries and enjoyed a very privileged life as a result. And when people peacefully said "we'd like to try something different" the vested interests brutally repressed them.
