It’s not that I don’t think we’re in with a chance. But this thread is writing off their chances cos they’ll have to rotate their squad. I’m saying that we’ll be rotating too, and it’s anyone’s game.

I was down at Brentford on Wednesday and Xhaka and the entire team needed a rest - painfully obvious how knackered they were. And I’m sure we’ll see that today. Potentially AFCON trio on the bench, but maybe not with the travel and lack of training. We’ll have to see.

Should be a good one anyway. Hopefully our away support can actually generate some noise for once, was pretty crap at Liverpool and Spurs recently! And always found big allocations can be quiet (Blackburn most recently from what I remember!)

I don't really tie in with footballers being tired malarky though, and thankfully RLB on the whole didn't either. I'm not sure who was going to tell Xhaka he had been rested...... And as has RLB since come out and said Sadiki approached him and wanted to be involved, I noticed on one of our main message boards, someone even mentioned that RLB needed resting from Pre-match press conferences...... Ha Ha.

That's as big a problem as their lack of quality. At the very least getting up and pressing should be a non negotiable

This specific front 3 from today is a relegation standard attack. They've been terrible 3 games in a row now.

I cant get over how that kit change was allowed today.

It made us look like the away team and allowed them the chance to play in their home kit.

It was a stupid move by a clueless club that's forgotten that winning matches is the only thing of consequence in decision making on game days.

Sunderland fan in peace here.

Pleased with the outcome but it was a much changed team for both so i'm not sure how much you can look into it when so many changes are made, we made 5 changes in the league cup at home vs huddersfield this season and got dumped out. I was pleased to avoid ndaiye and grealish today as both were excellent at the sol this season. Luckily sadiki was back after getting knocked out of afcon, he was an unreal find for us and linked up really well with xhaka .

Ref was shocking all game for both sides and crazy penalty decision just summed him up.

I'm sure it will be a very different game in the league when we meet in may, until then good luck with the season.

BTW.... love the new ground but will always prefer goodison, it was my favourite away ground as it is mostly a larger version of roker park.

Ive always like Sunderland so good luck in the cup.

Although what i will say about the penalty is that one might of been soft but we didnt get a stone wall one earlier in the game so i think it pans out.

Having said that i think id of rather been knocked out at 1-0 then went to penalties and it end like that

I don’t think there is a way to lose a penalty shootout with fewer penalties being taken. It’s surely a world record, and we were a part of it. It’s our very own 9 dart finish, but against us. Why are we so bad over Christmas and New Year? Do the players eat and drink too much? Did they get new video games for Christmas and want to spend more time at home playing them, hence the bans? Is the ACON a ready made get out of jail free card, (ignoring the fact that all the other prem clubs have the same card)? Are they waiting for reinforcements in the January transfer window?

Overall you deserved it mate, even before the pens.

Wouldn’t disagree with that mate, sorry. Thought we controlled the tempo of the game and had the better chances (Englands number one kept you in it first half).

Sure you’ll bounce back though, have a strong end to the season and go again next year with a better transfer window now you know you’re safe.

I agree the set ups in the last three have been very negative but I think he’s set us up pretty well when we’ve had our players available and we played some nice stuff with Ndiaye, Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall linking up and Garner getting involved too
