Europe Thread 25/26

Something in the Athletic yesterday about qualifying for Europe would have us in trouble with the different calculation of PSR for UEFA competitions. I'm not a subscriber so dont know the full story.

My suspicion is that these Everton-friendly client hacks are doing the bidding of someone somewhere.

Player spend (wages, transfer, agents fees) limit in PL is 85%. It drops to 70% in in UEFA competition so if we’ve budgeted for the former then we could breach the latter.

If our turnover is say £240m, we’d lose £36m of spending power but only get benefit of £15m if we win conference, so we’ll down overall. Might “break even” winning the Europa. This is why Prem clubs don’t want conference league football but as a fan it’s great!

F talking about it...

A fine would be a small price to pay to get that sort of profile again - especially with the new stadium to exploit. The exposure would be worth it and the experience we could hand to the whole of the squad would be worth it too.

Big problem for PL as very few teams available for the Monday night slot. So Everton get docked 15 points for not being available for that slot…… out of Europe as its backdated and we get our 8 home Monday games back
Big problem for football in general with how they're bloating tournaments with too many teams and too many meaningless matches in both European club competitions and in international national football tournaments too. Qualifying for such tournaments should feel like an achievement and been done through some excellence along the way but as we saw with Spurs laughably qualifying for the 'champions' league even though they finished 17th and in international football Sweden qualifying for the World Cup despite finishing bottom of their world cup qualifying group its all a bit of a farce now

Obviously you wouldn't turn it down, but I'm not sure CL qualification would be a good thing for us (not that it will happen anyway).

We wouldn't win it. I'd much rather qualify for a tournament we'd have a semi-realistic chance of winning, rather than struggle to get out of the groups of.

It's a double-edged sword in a way because you'd be able to attract better players if you're in the CL, but you're effectively saying that it's a trophy there's pretty much no chance of winning that we are in and I don't know about anyone else, but I would take any trophy at all now.
Let’s be honest
Out of the 32 teams that qualify for the CL at least 26 of them know they have no chance of winning it
They all still want to be in it
