Lamont Howard and even Bernard Jenkins of the ERG has laid into Government tonight over this... mwhahha!
Ok so to be clear this is something I do know about . There are no passport checks entering the mainland from Belfast . You may have checks that your ID matches your ticket by G4S this isn’t immigration , you may have your ID checked on arrival by CT /SB officers under the terrorism act this isn’t immigration and UKBA officers won’t check because they can’t Check if you’re travelling from Birmingham to London .
You compare Belfast to London then Paris to Dublin I’ll identify a problem one of those is travelling between different counties despite the freedom of movement so prior to us leaving UKBA could check their paperwork when they landed from Paris they can’t when they land from Belfast .
so a eu citizen or In some circumstances a non eu , there are some complicated travel arrangements to do with the republic which has been exploited for example by both Brazilian and Chinese citizens, lands in Dublin and isn’t checked Other than to a cursory level . They travel across the border to the north where they aren’t checked and then across the sea to the mainland where again. This isn’t taking control of your borders , it just isn’t, if anything It’s significantly less control than we had .
The only workable, or half workable , solution I can really see is a border down the Irish sea but that will isolate the north and almost certainly lead to the reunification of the island at some stage . Now I’m not saying I’m opposed to that but in order to achieve this Brexit idea it’s clear brexiteers seem totally prepared to chop off various bits of the UK .
I’m not saying this because I want to stop Brexit , I’m saying it because it seems mad to dismiss the concerns as they don’t fit . I’d much rather have a border down the Irish Sea than a hard border in the north but without either of those I don’t see a way out without ignoring the issue

Trade talks: Why chicken, cheese, and cod are a tricky menu
The UK this week pursues simultaneous talks with Japan, the US and EU to secure its post-Brexit future.www.bbc.co.uk
The author of the piece must have run out of space to explain the real reason this has fallen apart.
Perhaps @peteblue can help.
What is the immigration control from Belfast to Dublin?
What even is the immigration control for me flying Belfast to Liverpool?
Remember the ROI is not in Schengen so passport controls apply....
To the uk ? It’s in the common travel area
Never been stopped Dublin to Liverpool either. There would be none Belfast to Dublin, Belfast to Liverpool you would walk through U.K. only.....

It’s right back to where we were 2 years ago, it’s either special dispensation for Ireland as per the recently agreed Protocol or Boris Johnson is forcing British citizens in NI to produce a passport to travel internally within the U.K.we’ll chat a bit more about this tomorrow mate but are you suggesting you put up a sign saying “uk only “ ? What if they lie because UKBA can’t stop them because theyre travelling within the UK .
You won’t have been mate , it’s the CTA they can’t subject UK or Irish citizens To
Immigration controls except in exceptional circumstances. Unless it’s changed their methods of checking documentation was convoluted and on occasion required police or Special Branch assistance because they can stop anyone .
Needs a 40+1 rebellion to not go through, which it won't get. But it is god-stupid.
Lewis piddled on internal market bill straight away by declaring they are preparing to breach international law, the house of Lords wont accept this bill from Parliament...
Again, this is part of a negotiation. The U.K. has been a soft touch for far too long and allowed the EU to formulate a position where we split N.I. from the rest of the U.K., rather than the ROI from the rest of the EU. Personally I’m pleased we are playing the hardest of hardball and have the John Majors and Theresa May’s crying about it. Certain countries within the EU wouldn’t think twice about adopting similar tactics to try and gain an advantage. But yet again, all the Remainers are now really really concerned about International Law and how the U.K. is viewed, but in reality it’s just another cynical excuse to kick the Brexit team....
Yet everyone else is arguing that the U.K. should negotiate against its own interests, for whatever reasons.....
