The mainland will have immigration control In the same way that if people want to move from London to Belfast,Belfast to Dublin, Dublin to Paris, there would be immigration control in Paris.

They're going to be the greatest immigration controls in the world aren't they? We won't believe how many immigration controls we'll be doing per day

I am still struggling with the concept that the entire UK will soon be tested for Covid in one week. Unless its a bank holiday week.

Oh cazoo, its the EU thread. Soz.

Ok so to be clear this is something I do know about . There are no passport checks entering the mainland from Belfast . You may have checks that your ID matches your ticket by G4S this isn’t immigration , you may have your ID checked on arrival by CT /SB officers under the terrorism act this isn’t immigration and UKBA officers won’t check because they can’t Check if you’re travelling from Birmingham to London .

You compare Belfast to London then Paris to Dublin I’ll identify a problem one of those is travelling between different counties despite the freedom of movement so prior to us leaving UKBA could check their paperwork when they landed from Paris they can’t when they land from Belfast .

so a eu citizen or In some circumstances a non eu , there are some complicated travel arrangements to do with the republic which has been exploited for example by both Brazilian and Chinese citizens, lands in Dublin and isn’t checked Other than to a cursory level . They travel across the border to the north where they aren’t checked and then across the sea to the mainland where again. This isn’t taking control of your borders , it just isn’t, if anything It’s significantly less control than we had .

The only workable, or half workable , solution I can really see is a border down the Irish sea but that will isolate the north and almost certainly lead to the reunification of the island at some stage . Now I’m not saying I’m opposed to that but in order to achieve this Brexit idea it’s clear brexiteers seem totally prepared to chop off various bits of the UK .

I’m not saying this because I want to stop Brexit , I’m saying it because it seems mad to dismiss the concerns as they don’t fit . I’d much rather have a border down the Irish Sea than a hard border in the north but without either of those I don’t see a way out without ignoring the issue
