Boris Johnson's brother quitting parliament because he can't support the PM. Jesus you couldnt make it up!
Family loyalty vs National Interest

From the Minister of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Department of Education who you would presume has been privy to the Government impact assessments and across No Deal preparations.

IIRC he wanted a soft brexit, similar to the Norway deal
Which is as near as you can get to no brexit, without being a remainer

The point is; Parliament, deep down, know that in a good faith / fairplay way, they can't have another refferendum. But having knocked back Mays deal, Johnson's no deal, can't get their heads round the fact that Collectively they don't want the brexit they've been lumbered with. So what good will an Election do?
All concerned have painted themselves into their respective corners and can't or won't bring themselves to step on the political wet paint to solve this...if it is indeed solvable.

Any ideas on why the government haven't drawn up a quick cast-iron law which guarantees no change in status for current legal UK residents with non-Brit nationalities?

Such a law would solve a lot of the stress associated with No Deal.
Because the majority of Parliament are remainers and don't want anything that will help brexit

aye...the only reasonable way out is a NO DEAL vs REMAIN public referendum.

take the risk, Boris! end this madness.

40% of the actual vote, I meant.

I cant see any pact in any case. Farage's whole existence revolves around the Brexit question: resolve it and he has no axe to grind and no role to play in public life; see Brexit watered down or even denied, he becomes an even more pivotal figure in British politics and possibly supplants the Toties on the right of British politics.

Farage is in a near perfect position to fulfill his personal ambitions. To believe he'll sign up as a junior partner with the Tories is for the birds.
Who knows what will happen. But Farage will know that the only chance of securing a strong Brexit is to get a big majority of leave voting MPs in parliament. He will also know that pitting BP candidates against Tories in their strongholds is effectively splitting the leave vote and will risk losing those seats to SDLP.

I appreciate he is currently bigging up his party's rivalry with the Tories, but if Farage is in any way a pragmatic man, and I have no idea whether or not he is, then he will know that he has more chance of reaching his goal if he works with the Tories rather than against them. Johnson will know that he could well need the BPs support in getting his own Brexit plans through parliament. He will also know that the BP are much more likely than the Tories to be able to steal the Labour vote of the north and midland leave voting labour constituencies. Plus, as you know, Johnson is also perfectly capable of making all sorts of promises to get Farage on board, and then go back on them if it suits his purposes.

I therefore don't understand how you can declare with such confidence that there will be no pact between the 2 parties.

The EU spent their time between the referendum and the start of negotiations organising themselves and coming up with an agreed strategy for the Brexit negotiations. We spent our time fighting futile court cases and organising general elections.

How can anybody be surprised at how things turned out.

You know what Barney, that is the most convincing argument I have ever read in favour of staying in the EU.

The EU.....getting organised and formulating a strategy like responsible adults.

The UK......total chaos, lurching from one crisis to another, like recalcitrant children.
