  1. Your sarcasm is one of the few perfect pieces of writing on here. The Chelsea 6-3 game was a Road To Damascus moment for Martinez, and its why we started to play keep ball at the back, so slowly. The players didn't have the ability or confidence to play the Martinez game at a higher tempo, and Martinez had concerns about the goals we were shipping...and so we didn't play with the freedom of last season. Only in Europe did we play with freedom, and we were excellent in the Group games. In the away leg v Kiev, we came up against a side with attacking potential, a massive crowd behind them, and who were unbeaten at home for a long time. It was always going to be a very difficult game, and Martinez probably felt it was safer to play on the front foot than try to stop such a free scoring side by partially parking the bus. He could have made the right call, quite easily....its not often a team scores 5 goals from 8 attempts.

Mindreader?

astonishing arrogance that you think you determine levels of perfection.

Did he really refuse to blame the defending ? Can't ever take the guy seriously again after coming out with that.

A comment along the lines of "we defended poorly and it's something we need to work on" would have gone a long way down the path of appeasement.

Instead he insults us by refusing to recognize the problem.

Which is why he is a dead man walking.

He said that we defended poorly as a team and that he refused to blame the defence as all 11 men defended badly. That seems reasonable enough to me,

it is reasonable, considering the whole team besides Ross and Rom (AM and ST) played like crap

Not individual players, but he could have lambasted his defence publicly. Because that is where the problem lies.

Maybe he just doesn't want to admit it.

What he could've done is have his HT team talk out on the pitch in front of the fans, and given them a good bollocking for everyone to see.

But we have to remember that it was the same manager and largely the same squad last year. So imo, it's at least partly a confidence issue. We got off to a bad start, right from the outset when we threw two points away against Leicester, and we allowed our heads to drop. That is no doubt in part a coaching issue, but the players also have to take a lot of responsibility for letting it get to them.

I'm on page 186 and haven't offered an opinion, yet. I have a lot of opinions about what I've read in the first 185pp but I haven't got the time. I'm disappointed but I don't see much point in blaming people.

My question here Is - Do you think it would have been any different if we'd won at Leicester? And then held on to a 2-0 lead against Arsenal
a week later?

Barry was instrumental in our good 2013/14 season, but he's 36 and has gone on a year too long. Tim Howard is 37 and his reflexes have slowed. Distin is 37.

I've been defending Martinez, but I do question his selections and inflexibility with his game plan.

I don't think 5-2 was a fair reflection of the match. We weren't that bad and I think they're better than some here are giving them credit for.

I think they can go further in this and I hope they do.
