Duncan Ferguson

I think we love him so much because they were pretty dark days for our club, with not a lot else to get excited about. Duncan may have taken the headlines for the wrong reasons on quite a few occasions, but we loved him because of that, because you could tell that he was hurting just as much as we all were to see us always hovering in and around the relegation zone.

Tim Cahill will be remembered just as fondly, but in a different way. Duncan Ferguson was one of very few bright sparks in a time of darkness, Cahill is one of the guiding lights that has brought us out of it, along with Sir Moyes and a few noteable others.

Ask City about Adebayor kicking RVP. Football is measured by its tough guys, Keane, Shearer, Ferguson, Reid, Styles. Sometimes sadly sport is not about art but about who cares most, and that is why so many members in the media go on and on about British players and winning mentalities. Anyone can ballet around the pitch when things are going their way (Arsenal) but when it comes to the trenches, suddenly hardcore b@st@rds are the order of the day. Working class game for working class people. Rooney can grab all the cash to put him on a par with McCartney, the two will always be working class, a few quid doesn't change the strpies on a tiger.

yup- its a working class game but i`d sooner watch fellaini ballet dancing round the pitch than neil ruddock and julian dicks wellying it into the stands. ferguson was a liability and probably got sent off on purpose so he could go pidgeon fancying, we shouldve left him at newcastle- theres 20 players here now who deserve more credit than ferguson but evertonians got caught up in the hype. cult hero= someone who is idolised by a few. sums it up really.

Big Stuart Barlow fan instead then were you in the 90's?
Nobody says The Yak or Saha are milking the money because they were/are having as much time off as Dunc did, on more money and all.
I could imagine being misdiagnosed by your own staff for years would be pretty frustrating, add that to the fact that we pretty much ruined him with the medication being given because of said misdiagnosis.
Footy at end of day is about entertainment, and that he was, for good or for bad.

i`m a fan of anyone in a blue shirt. ferguson didnt do enough for me to warrant being a cult hero nevermind a legend. if i want entertainment i`ll go to the cinema- if i want goals for Everton tony cottee would beat dunc fergie by miles but theres not a peep about him - just the big dunc hype

Id say he was a legend, he scored goals, he entertained, he gave us hope.

Hope for a better world.

Hope for a better future.

I want my kids to be like Dunc. Not afraid to head butt their way out of/in to anything.

I think it's all relative isn't it - would Cottee have been as prolific if he had been playing in the team that Duncan played in? Am I right in thinking that Duncan is still our top scorer in the Premier League era? He more than played his part, gave his body for the club, and he did it with the passion and spirit of a true Evertonian.

I've said this so many times....

Dunc was a hero when we badly needed one. He is never a Legend. You just cant put him in the same bracket as 'Ball,Harvey,Dixi,Sharp, young' etc,etc....

He had pronominal talent but never fulfilled it. Shame really as he had a great all round game.

Cahill on the other hand is not the greatest footballer but oozes Everton and everything associated. His tenacity and willing to put in a graft makes up for everything he lacks.

If one will make the hall of fame...

It should be Cahill!!!

Looking at players of a similar stature (i.e. Crouch) Duncan was phenomenally talented compared to them.

Still my footballing hero, wouldn't come out of retirement though, he's enjoying his pigeons too much.

Duncan means everything to me, no other man has made me cry so much - through happiness and sadness!
The only other player who comes close is Carsley - so often the unsung hero and under appreciated by our fans!
Don't get me wrong, Timmys superb and I love him to bits but he will never come close to Duncan. Dunc's one of us and was treated badly by our club who sold him behind his back but he still loved us and came home - taking a massive pay cut to do so!
Duncan Ferguson may not be seen as a legend by many; but he is by me. Its his name and number on the back of my home shirt this season - there was no alternative!!!

So Dunc had phenomenal talent but never fulfilled it, and so isn't a legend.
Cahill is not the greatest player but makes up for it by oozing Everton and therefore is a legend?

Did Duncan not also ooze Everton? I'm in no way trying to suggest that Tim Cahill shouldn't go down an Everton legend, he very much should. But Duncan should too.

He may not have achieved as highly as his potential may have allowed, but the lad had trouble with injuries and for every second that he was on a football pitch with that blue shirt on he fought blood and thunder for our cause. In a team that was, to be frank, hugely limited, Duncan was the heart and soul of the club for a while.

No one is trying to say that he's as good as "'Ball,Harvey,Dixi,Sharp, young' etc,etc...." but that does not mean he isn't an Everton legend. Cahill is not as good as "'Ball,Harvey,Dixi,Sharp, young' etc,etc...." either, but as you rightly argue, is also an Everton legend.

When will people realise it depends on the person?

Sure, Ball, Dean, Sharp and so on may go down as legends, but I know I didn't remember them.

I do remember Dunc and obviously Cahill, however, so to me the first is a legend, and no doubt the latter will be.

It's a bit childish arguing over the semantics; what makes someone a "legend" or an "idol" etc. It's whatever you feel. Some of you might class Carsley as a legend, whereas others think he was badly gash. No one is right -- deal with it.

Sorry to upset you mate, but when Dunc was at Everton. I went everywhere home and away. he just never turned up. He was a big game player really. When he was up for it, he was unplayable. But he never turned up that often. He was especially [Poor language removed] away from home.

At least cahill gives you the same every time he plays.
