Did we ever put Moyes under Pressure

Some rather bizarre revisionism of Moyes tenure at Everton in this thread. Regardless of his behaviour and performance since, Moyes was a very good Everton manager, excellent at times.

He lowered expectations?? Really? We had just had a decade of finishing in the bottom half, and expectations when he took over were to stay up, and maybe look towards mid table.
The 'glass ceiling' isnt something that he invented - it is genuinely there - no club without heavy investment has finished top four since, well, we did it. Newcastle came close and we have come close several times since but fell just short. And guess what - without substantial investment in Jan we will fall short again this year.

For me, the only real criticism of Moyes at Everton would be the meek surrenders at Anfield and Old Trafford (and not every season by any means), and his continuing support of BK.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Roberto, a much needed breath of fresh air - but lets not pretend he has already skated past Moyes achievements at Everton (yes i used that word despite us not winning a trophy) because he has a long way to go to do that yet.

The simple fact that he seems privileged to be managing Everton already elevates him above that f*cking ogre.

Because he knew he already had the United job and wasn't arsed. He'd met Fergie at Christmas and had been told then that he was the 'Chosen One'. Fergie confirmed this in writing in his book. Moyes for some reason continues to say something different to this day.
This is a myth. Someone posted the bit of Ferguson's book which apparently says this verbatim on here a few weeks ago. It doesn't say Moyes knew at christmas, it says Ferguson floated the idea of retiring among his United colleagues around Christmas.

I reckon Moyes knew before he says he did but the book isn't the smoking gun that the Everton forumsphere would have you believe.

You serious about that last part mate ?

Been thiking this a lot lately myself. The thing with Moyes was he knew that 7th was acceptable and anything above that made him look like a miracle worker, it seemed come the last 3 or 4 games of the last 5 season that he just started to settle for that. As another poster said last year was a massive opportunity to get a european spot, a combination of an inept board and a manager that seemed to settle for anything above 8th place cost us IMO. He had such a cushy job here, the players we had we were never going to be dragged down into a relegation scrap or even a bottom half finish. There was no pressure on him at all. Doesnt look like he can handle it at UTD

There were times where i'd be against Moyes, the period where we lost consecutive 4-0's in December, and we looked doomed, but i genuinely think Moyes played the fans that much with the "We're not expecting anything, no money", that he may have believed it himself. He had a good side here, but played really dull football, and it stagnated so quickly, that he became fed up, and that we were too, there was no fire in our bellies, just kind of an expectance of boring football, and false hope of a win at Anfield. With no expectations, and a loyal group of fans behind him, it would have taken something like playing a reserve team in a derby, and getting thumped, for him to realise that he had to try a bit. But then that actually happened, and even then nothing happened, he knew he was untouchable.
When we did lose 3-0 to Wigan, the whole of Goodison seemed more resigned to the end of an Era, than opposed to Angry, hating the fella's negative tactics. I think at that point, everyone realised it was time for Moyes to go, 2 months later, and everyone was upset at his departure, as opposed to excited for a new chapter.

So naturally, as he's gone over to Salford, their expectations are hugely different, but he's still tried to lower them, and take pressure off his back, but he may have gotten away with it, had he not lost as frequently as he had. I do feel Fergie being here ever game piles on pressure for him, but i feel how Martinez has came in, inherited his squad, plus a few (crucial) signings, and done how he's done have made people turn around and actually question his credentials in the first place.

For me, both sides needed to part, sadly for him, we got the best deal. It's evident to see for me, as we played Bolton in a midweek game in January, 2 years ago now, there was 29,500 there, to emphasise how that's changed, we've got fans on this very board asking if anyone has two spares together for a home game against Norwich, i can't remember that EVER happening before.

The thing is now Bobby is our manager we go to the match full of optimism, I never ever had any optimism going to the match when Moyes was our manager, o k we finished a season in 4th but we always seemed to be hanging on at the end of most matches, and anything would be an improvement after our Blessed Walter.
Bobby has given me belief and that's what it's all about I M O and Evertonians who have not set foot in Goodison are now starting to come back which must prove something.

He does look extremely haggard and stressed. I think he is perhaps realising firstly not only was this United team obscenely inflated by Ferguson's impact mentally, but also through that, perhaps he is realising his own limitations in terms of managerial skill. I don't know how large an ego he has, but witnessing the sheer gulf in performance that Ferguson elicited through whatever means as opposed to what he has got out of them, has to make him question himself.

Not a great time for him.

Fergie got lucky by having Van Persie fit for a season, plus every other team underperforming. That United team last season was awful beyond belief.

Moyes brainwashed a lot of people by his subtle put downs, he would do it in nearly every interview, because Evertonians ha been through some terrible years it made it easier for him. I personally couldn't see past his terrible style of football so pretty much ignored his opinions.
