2025/26 David Moyes

Hello.

You can say you think something will happen, without necessary expecting it.

Vs Burnley I thought we'd win. I also expected us to win.

Vs Nottingham Forest. I think we'll get a result, but I dont expect it.

Hope that helps.

As someone else post this thread is becoming tedious, mind.
Saying you think something WILL happen implies expectation for the future. It is the future tense and includes predictions and expectations. The expectation is implied in the use of the future tense.

It is an indication you believe something will occur in the future. I.e. an expectation.

Cambridge dictionary expectation

the feeling that good things are going to happen in the future:

We've got to stop with this. Everyone on here is desperate for us to win. Nobody wants us to lose, it's a tedious argument that gets trotted out time and again and it has no basis in reality. We may disagree on how to get us winning but nobody is rooting for us to lose.
There's people who are going to be delighted to promote their Anti Moyes or Pro Dyche views if we do lose.

That much is very clear.

No that doesn’t help at all. Why would you think we’re going to get a result if you don’t expect us to? If you don’t expect us to get a result tomorrow then you obviously think we won’t get a result?

“I think we will win” is different to saying I think we can win”, I get that. But his statement was “I think we will win”. So he expects to win then.

Thinking is prediction.

Expecting is psychological ownership of an outcome that hasn’t happened yet.

I can understand why you'd struggle to grasp the difference, but there definitely is one.

But why would you ever predict something that don’t actually believe is going to happen? Once again, we’re not talking about someone implying a possibility of something happening, we’re talking about someone predicting an outcome that they believe is going to happen.

agree that no one is desperate for us to lose, but I’d find it hard to believe that anyone could think that certain posters don’t tend to get a sort of sycophantic buzz from us losing. If you can’t celebrate us winning but revel in us losing, and, yes, this is in reference to how many posts we see following a win vs loss/disappointing draw. I’d be interested to see the justification for that from balanced middle of the road posters.

Yeah they're similar, but theres a difference.

Think = probability
Expect = assumed reality

There's loads of things I think will happen, but more of a hunch than what I expect to happen.

I can understand someone saying think they we'll win, but don't expect it. I do that most games with Everton.
