2025/26 David Moyes

Been dipping in and out of this thread and some of this has likely already been said, but I'll have my two pence on the cup failures this season...

Firstly, I absolutely expect the club, manager and team to take the cup competitions "seriously", but I'm not sure what some mean by that. We win, fine. We lose, we didn't take it seriously?

As has already been said, the two cup losses were poor in the main. However, we fielded probably the best side we could cobble together against Sunderland, a PL team who at the time were in good form and above us in the table. We didn't play well but scraped a 1-1 draw and then produced one of the worst shootout displays I've seen to go out on pens. Fine margins on that one but probably more disappointing as we had the home draw and so many fans had to watch a poor display in our new stadium.

In the league cup, after dispatching Mansfield, we drew another PL team. Away at Wolves this time who admittedly were in some pretty garbage form at the time but a PL team all the same and at their place. Here's you can probably pick holes in the starting line up but on paper it should have been enough to win the game and ultimately the players had an off day.

So no "cup run". But look at some of the teams that did go on cup runs and it can be very different. Chelsea are in the Qtr final of the FA Cup, against Port Vale, so could well reach the semis, and on that "cup run" they've faced the might of Charlton, Hull, and Wrexham. All away granted but a pretty kind draw. Leeds have faced Derby A, Birmingham A, and Nowrich H, before finally facing a PL side in West Ham. Arsenal have faced Portsmouth A, Wigan H, and Mansfield A, now facing Southampton in the quarters which feels like a kind draw. City faced Exeter H, and Salford H before having to take on Newcastle away. Finally the RS have had Barnsley H, Brighton H, and Wolves A, so probably the tougher of the runs.

So in the FA Cup at least, a "cup run" can very much be influenced by a kind draw. Not excusing going out with a whimper against a poor Wolves team but it is often fine margins between appearing to take it "seriously" and having the run end abruptly early on. That's the nature of cup competitions. Ultimately a run counts for very little unless you win it.

I want us to do well in cups but it only counts for anything if we win the pot, which has been pointed out on this thread is very difficult for anyone outside the established clubs to do (although not impossible so shouldn't be written off).

I do agree that building a stronger, more competitive squad with consistent improvement in the league will naturally make us more competitive in the cups.

No excuses, just reflection really 🤷‍♂️

The problem with the current transfer set up there's no accountability. They all say Moyes has the final day and can beto. But considering the treatment of some of the players I would assume the committee offer him players who they want and can get and he's probably begrudgingly ok'd a few of the players I mentioned.

The club obviously had a remit to sign young players with high ceilings and it looks obvious to me that Moyes wasn't/isn't onboard with it.
Accountability to who?

Given Moyes is only using 60% of his squad how can you argue he’s making the best use of it?
Pretty easily. Moyes sees the players in training every day and is a very experienced coach. He is picking the players he thinks are most in form and most suit the way he wants to play which he thinks is our best chance of picking up points. Not playing players who play badly and having a settled first XI is clearly a good thing. Not sure how any one can argue to the contrary. All of the squad players have been given chances and they haven't impressed. It would be insane to just keep playing them.

Moyse was always happy fighting for top 6 while playing down any chances of improving that. With limited budget it meant he was very much appreciated by the club and most supporters. Now even with more cash to spend the owners would still be happy avoiding relegation fears. For them the prem is the holy grail. If I wanted to manage everton it would be easy. Just let the senior players along with Bainesy pick the team and work it out on the pitch.
None of this has happened.

Love him or hate him that’s a pretty accurate description of Moyes, he’s a conservative, no risks manager when it comes to team selection and he makes it work. Personally I wish at times he’d take more risks in terms of developing our younger players . But you can’t argue with the results, the starting line up against Chelsea had only one player ,KDH , who wasn’t here last season and they gave our best performance for a long time.

The summer before we knew Thelwell was accountable for N'Diaye, O'Brien and Alcaraz.

Nobody is quite sure who is to blame for last summer's [Poor language removed] show.
I think last summers recruitment was slightly haphazard due to certain scouts and talent identifiers not being in position.

Some of which only took up their roles after the season started.

Am expecting to see a more coherent summer of transfer activity.

If we're going into the season still needing a CB RB and a forward someone is getting a dig.

That's a massive load of excuses for two terrible cup efforts.

No fans you mean. The management of the club will be aware so there will be internal accountability which is all that matters. Accountability to fans is irrelevant.

One of them the Mickey Mouse three handled piss pot cup that you’ve wanted us to forfeit every other season?

Buddy how’s the hangover?

Really really hard to be a striker in a Moyes team but I genuinely find delap to be a bit of a donkey, not sure he would fit the style of play, and he's a flat track bully with very little to his game.

I am very interested to see just what type of striker we go for in the summer, Moyes always seems to get strikers that don't fit his style and then try and change them into the striker he wants to be instead of playing to their strengths,

Important we get that position done right.
