David Moyes and transfer windfalls.

Having a pop at Moyes record in the transfer market by taking it solely in isolation & not comparing it to that of his peers, is stupid beyond belief - on both counts - imo.

I take it you're saying we signed Michu then? (or a similar forward for 2 million at least).

Please furnish me with the names (the season is a long way off and I could do with the entertainment) .... in your own time dear boy.

Cahill is the closest, but Moyes weakness was strikers. Man u wont have to worry about this as they have the best strikers already at the club.

Agreed, the poster I was responding to either didn't get it or is one of the sulky thick as a brick Moyes boys - judging by the accompanying neg rep I'd say the latter.

Who were his peers?

I struggle with this old chestnut because only Wenger and SAF enjoyed the same duration of tenure and copper bottomed security in the job - makes no sense at all.

Heroic mate, calling up names Moyes DIDN'T sign as vindication of his transfer prowess is just magnificent.

As someone completely bewildered by the whole Moyes "thing" I salute you - just brilliant.

I don't think you understood, Nigel. These are players we would have signed had we actually had big money, or at the very least, were big fans of. Now, would these players have been wise business or not? Take Hazard for example. Would you have liked to have seen him in an Everton shirt? He'd have cost, by our standards, big money. Moutinho would have been our record signing. Is it Moyes' fault we never signed these players? Does Moyes wanting to bring them in not suggest a keen eye for a quality young player? Is this a valid point or are you going to deny we ever had any interest in any of those players?

Mate the problem is when does interest become a genuine bit of potential business? I'm loathe to say you're entirely speculating with these names (for all I know you may be privy to insider info) but if we're going off rumours etc it's flimsy isn't it?

I'm guessing every manager in the division covets Gareth Bale but realistically does that contribute to their reputation?

I do understand your point but surely you understand every manager in the country could regale us all with tales of "ones that got away" - I still like the audacity of using it to prop up Moyes.

No offence meant btw. (y)

No doubt moyes was handy in the transfer market albeit no great pressure on the players he bought. We all knew the score with regards to budget etc and he had more success than failures. I don't think Martinez will be afforded the 'some you win some you lose' leniency that Moyes had which will be a tad unfair. Moyes will feel pressure at Man Utd because every signing will be scrutinized and he also will not have the leniency from the supporters that AF earned.

Yes,at this moment in time but what will they be like by the time Moyes puts his marker down ?
He has got an appalling record with strikers, purple patches here and there but overall a lot to be desired IMO

Its doesn't matter, Man u have world class strikers and will be able to afford world class strikers, he had an easier job at man u then us mate where he got to try and find us a world class striker on coppers, at man u he will be allowed to spend 30 million on one player. No way he can ruin VP and Rooney.

Fair a snuff,we will see x

His length of tenure is largely irrelevant, albeit you saw him succeeding in the market year after year after year.....

His peers are all other PL managers, who've had more than a 1 season wonder & his record in the transfer market stands up to all of them - bar none.

I know we had a bid rejected for Mout - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/e/everton/7527890.stm

And Essien - http://www.skysports.com/story/0,,11669_2266900,00+en-USS_01DBC.html

Out interest in Dzeko was a strong interest apparently and the Hazard thing was virtually done and dusted according to LCAB (I know). I don't see why he'd mislead people on that after he'd signed for Chelsea, like. I can't be arsed looking for any more.

Moyes doesn't really need propping up on transfers really. His two biggest signings were both good business. Unfortunately, one of them spent the best part of a year injured and was never the same for us. You can point to Bily, to an extent AJ and certainly Beattie, but the fact that there's only a few names on there over an 11 year period speaks volumes. If there was ever a position he was hit and miss on though, it was strikers. It's just our luck that when we got that 20-goal-a-season player, he got injured.

Moyes will now be shopping at Harrods not at the local car boot sale....but many a bargain has been had at a car boot.

What is the definition of ruin when it comes to a striker like RVP. If he were to score 15 league goals next season,is that ruining him, by his standards ?

I have always credited David Moyes with what he has done for Everton ,turning a relegation certainty into CL contenders.
But,I don't believe he will do well at Utd,I think they will struggle to win any major competitions while heis manager, because I believe he is naturally too cautious as a manager, I further believe it was that caution which was the glass ceiling that prevented him takig the club further as much as it was the shortage of funds.
We saw that he could assemble a great team on a shoestring, but maybe couldn't always get the best from them.
At Utd,he already has a great team, the question is can he get the best out of them every day...because that is what h must do in the job ?

Martinez is less cautious and if he is as good a manager as we are told, then hopefully he can get that little extra from the players.
