ICU staff are a pretty special breed and can't just be plucked from other wards and chucked in there. It's a pretty specialised skillset so when you start losing people who already by the nature of the job have a pretty high [Poor language removed] and fan tolerance it's not ideal. Which is kind of why it's so upsetting to hear people like @JLW say the other day that they're not bothered about trying to do what "he" can to reduce the strain these people are under as it's the government's problem, not his. And I don't work in ICU so I can imagine how it must feel to those who do.
I remember my time in an ICU after a triple bypass. The staff sat at the end of my bed throughout the night, checking and adjusting whatever. When I went back to a normal ward my impressions were of chalk and cheese. The nurses were excellent, but not of the standard of the ICU people…imo……

ICU nurses are generally brilliant everywhere and they have to be. My father had an aortic dissection years ago and the amount of care he had while he was in ICU was phenomenal. As for general ward nurses it can depend on the hospital and even the shift if they are decent or not.
