Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I’m not in anyway seeking to mitigate the seriousness but dealing with your last sentence over the underlying issues the linked article does say

“In England, 37 more people who tested positive for COVID-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths there to 257.

The patients were aged between 18 and 102 years old - thought to be the youngest and oldest so far.

They were all were in vulnerable groups, including with underlying health conditions”

Yeh, again I feel bad for 'liking' this post.

Doesn't at all take away from the tragedy of it. And as someone has said it could be that people aren't even aware of the underlying issue which is even more dangerous.

This illness is serious. But the likelihood of it being fatal is very slim if you don't have a compromised immune system in some way. And in that sense it's no different to any other virus. Again I want to stress I am not at all trying to say this isn't a serious illness and I really hope nobody I know gets it.

Most experts have said what makes it stand out is the spread / rate of infection and obviously the respiratory bit.

Fwiw the CDC seems to be saying it is routine here in US
CDC recommends PPSV23 for all adults 65 years or older, people 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions, and adults 19 through 64 years old who smoke cigarettes.
My doctor recommended the pneumonia jab for me a few weeks back but they didn't have any in stock.

Wonder if this explains the gender differences seen in COVID serious cases - globally 40% of men smoke compared to 9% women

Not at all taking away from your point here legs, but do we really need a doctor/study to tell us smoking means your likely to be in trouble if you get this?

I suppose it's good to know, but talk about stating the obvious. At least the evidence is there now.

Yep my dad is due to have his next year – just asked.

Again, is it not something which could be rolled out earlier though in a situation like this?

I mean I know there's enough strain now but back in Feb/late Jan could they not have said we're going to start rolling this out to people under that age bracket or especially those with 'underlying issues'. It won't stop COVID-19 but if it can contribute towards a stronger immune system then surely it could have helped.

Again not saying it's some mad conspiracy. Just seems another step which could feasibly have been taken.

Fair point although these were probably lower numbers than I’d have expected if asked to guess.
"we can calculate that the smokers were 1.4 times more likely (RR=1.4, 95% CI: 0.98–2.00) to have severe symptoms of COVID-19 and approximately 2.4 times more likely to be admitted to an ICU, need mechanical ventilation or die compared to non-smokers (RR=2.4, 95% CI: 1.43–4.04)"

But as I said I wonder if it accounts for the marked difference in cases results for men/women.

Spot on and it's exactly what Johnson said.

I'm no fan but criticising the bloke for saying people still need to be able to get some fresh air and exercise and keep their mental wellbeing at least slightly positive through that is crazy.

If Corbyn had said the same thing (which I imagine he would) would all these people be saying the same stuff?

As I've said, we're doing exactly what the Netherlands are atm.

As far as I'm aware, not every part of Italy is in full lockdown either.

Maybe we need to follow the German's lead and stop 'gatherings' of two or more people?

I'm sure a lockdown will come if needed but why are people actively wanting to be locked in their house for three months? I feel awful for the people who were told that's what they're going to have to do today. It's horrid. Absolutely horrid.

Its people puffing their chests out after 2 days in doors you'll start to notice less and less folk come out with this the longer they are stuck indoors and reality hits them as you say I couldn't imagine anything much worse.

Thankfully I still have to go out for work but in my spare time outside of Everton I do largely BJJ (which is currently a non starter) therefore its only fishing I have left as a hobby so I'll be gutted if I can't even do that.

Its also tough on my missus as she works from home but has the little lad whos a nightmare at the best of times and our dog is a high energy breed who simply gets destructive if bored/not adequately exercised (which isnt a quick 10 minute walk around the block) therefore having access to the outdoors is essential for us really if anything just for a mental release and to keep cabin fever at bay.

That's definitely interesting. Could well be!

Also, just thought I'd check stats for Italy and UK. Obviously this is difficult to gauge fully but...

Italy, as of 2018, there was reported to be approx 11.6 million cigarette smokers (I guess this is all based on averages).

UK, as of last year – 16.5% of men (around 3.9 million) and 13.0% of women (around 3.2 million) reported being smokers (again I guess based on an average). So total of 7.2million (approx)
