Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

That all sounds very reasonable mate.

But me and the missus are doing our best to follow government guidelines. Our nearest supermarket is 5 miles away. We tend to go later in the day when they are less busy (social distancing and all that) and we would normally do a main shop once a week when we stock up for the following week. This week we have had to go Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and yesterday we actually went to two separate supermarkets, the second being 15 miles away. And still we don't have enough fresh food to last us a week.

Ideally we'd prepare our own meals, except we haven't been able to buy much in the way of fresh meats to do that. We did manage to get a couple of nice looking steaks yesterday and a couple of chicken dings.

Unless we ration it the wine and beer will also run out before then. We tried to buy 4 bottles of wine (2 each) yesterday. Despite the shop being empty (literally about 4 other shoppers apart from us in there) and only about 10 items in our trolley, the checkout guy said we could only buy 3 bottles of wine. But presumably had I got there at 6am that morning I could have walked out with 3 boxes of beer. Anyway we gave 1 back without complaint or comment.

So yeah. I suppose that is my definition.

My wife has never done a ‘weekly’ shop. It’s all day to day. So no stockpile as she would not allow it. I’m working on the basis that if if it’s not there then we’ll have something else. Fortunately I do have access to wine now the pub is closed, together with industrial sized toilet rolls. Luckily milk cannot be hoarded so that’s OK, and there are several small shops in the villages around where we can find stuff. I also heard today that the local Tesco will be allowing the likes of ourselves access between 9-10am Mon/We’d/Fri, but that will mean me disobeying the instruction to stay indoors for 12 weeks.....

This is just my completely non-PhD educated opinion, but I think it's an easy to see how CV could well have infected anywhere between, let's say 10-30% of the general population already.

The reported cases can only ever be a fraction of the true number of cases. Most people who get it will just have mildish symptoms which they will naturally recover from.

This is almost certainly a GOOD thing, as it will mean that the fatality rate is much lower than the reported rate.
The 8% stuff is for over 60's. Fatality is likely to be 0.7% which is still shocking, not Ebola shocking, but bad for such a communicable disease.

How come we aint giving people the pneumococcal vaccine?

Surely if COVID 19 is killing by bringing on pneumonia then having had the vaccine would atleast prevent that you would think?

Just pondering.

This is the problem - they aren't.

Still seeing gangs of teenagers roving the streets as ever was.

I'd happily see them shot with rubber bullets personally.
Then parents need to take more responsibility for them. Bring in fines if necessary. If that doesn't work shoot the buggers with rubber bullets as you say.

But responsible people shouldn't be penalised for the actions of a moronic minority. They need exercise and a change of scenery, if only for half an hour or so, to try and maintain the sanity. Locking everybody like a police state is not the answer. As I say, it will need policing and that is taking important people away from where they are needed more.

I can understand the resistance to a full lockdown at this stage.

The only country which has completed a lockdown so far for the length required is China, and we’ve had no feedback about the impact on the general population. Italy have been doing it for less than two weeks, and it may require another 4-6.

There will be millions of people who are currently practising good social distancing who will be locked up in their homes unnecessarily through no fault of their own. If this continues for weeks it will have a huge impact on mental health.

Spot on and it's exactly what Johnson said.

I'm no fan but criticising the bloke for saying people still need to be able to get some fresh air and exercise and keep their mental wellbeing at least slightly positive through that is crazy.

If Corbyn had said the same thing (which I imagine he would) would all these people be saying the same stuff?

As I've said, we're doing exactly what the Netherlands are atm.

As far as I'm aware, not every part of Italy is in full lockdown either.

Maybe we need to follow the German's lead and stop 'gatherings' of two or more people?

I'm sure a lockdown will come if needed but why are people actively wanting to be locked in their house for three months? I feel awful for the people who were told that's what they're going to have to do today. It's horrid. Absolutely horrid.

pete we disagree politically Pretty much as two people can but we can certainly put a pin in that .

I suspect many of us are going to be on here a significant amount over the next few weeks so it’s up to us to try and keep each of us from turning into Charles Whitman and out of our respective bell tower’s.

chin up mate and keep healthy .

Indeed....well said...

@Tubey that thing about the school kids is spot on.

Saw the same on Friday.

Tomorrow I'll have a drive past down my local park (which is next to a very rough estate, granted) but I bet it'll be full of at least 30-50 kids.

It's going to prove an issue.
