Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I can understand the resistance to a full lockdown at this stage.

The only country which has completed a lockdown so far for the length required is China, and we’ve had no feedback about the impact on the general population. Italy have been doing it for less than two weeks, and it may require another 4-6.

There will be millions of people who are currently practising good social distancing who will be locked up in their homes unnecessarily through no fault of their own. If this continues for weeks it will have a huge impact on mental health.
The lack of new cases the last few days, with only arriving people diagnosed. But tbh, I don't know whether they've ever been truthful with the data.

Ordinarily and without good reason it would, but when you see the consequences of the alternative I think people will be accepting.. at least until we see other countries start to relax their lockdown, and there will definitely be coordinated action to ensure that no one breaks ranks unduly.

I guess its your definition.

Have I panic bought and lobbed tons of food in the trolly despite being fit and healthy? No.

Have I made sure there is enough healthy food and essentials, inc meds, in the house by lobbing one or two extra items in my basket each day for 2 or 3 weeks? Yes. Been doing it for 6 weeks.
That all sounds very reasonable mate.

But me and the missus are doing our best to follow government guidelines. Our nearest supermarket is 5 miles away. We tend to go later in the day when they are less busy (social distancing and all that) and we would normally do a main shop once a week when we stock up for the following week. This week we have had to go Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and yesterday we actually went to two separate supermarkets, the second being 15 miles away. And still we don't have enough fresh food to last us a week.

Ideally we'd prepare our own meals, except we haven't been able to buy much in the way of fresh meats to do that. We did manage to get a couple of nice looking steaks yesterday and a couple of chicken dings.

Unless we ration it the wine and beer will also run out before then. We tried to buy 4 bottles of wine (2 each) yesterday. Despite the shop being empty (literally about 4 other shoppers apart from us in there) and only about 10 items in our trolley, the checkout guy said we could only buy 3 bottles of wine. But presumably had I got there at 6am that morning I could have walked out with 3 boxes of beer. Anyway we gave 1 back without complaint or comment.

So yeah. I suppose that is my definition.

After all this I hope Northerners will start to show the Conservative government more respect. Many will still not agree with their politics and that's fine, but going round calling people out for being Tory C**** and saying Evertonians / Kopites / Scousers can only be Labour voters has to stop. The government really are doing there best for EVERYONE and I have much more faith in this current government than if Corbyn's Labour had got in. Things would be somehow even worse.

You sir, have elevated yourself to Prize Plum in one post.
Unaware of the havoc wreaked by tory governments?
Unaffected by tory austerity policy?
Happy to see an NHS broken and in no fit condition to deal with this crisis?
Content to stereotype people in different parts of the country?
You sir are a tory **** and I couldn't give a monkey's chuff if you are a blue or not. Bellend.

I will be going into a 12 week lockdown tomorrow, while also looking after and teaching a 7 year old because the school has closed. At least after her mum comes home I can nip down to the pub...oh no wait...well at least I’ve got this place to keep be sane...oh no wait......

pete we disagree politically Pretty much as two people can but we can certainly put a pin in that .

I suspect many of us are going to be on here a significant amount over the next few weeks so it’s up to us to try and keep each of us from turning into Charles Whitman and out of our respective bell tower’s.

chin up mate and keep healthy .

Hell yes. It’s absolutely necessary now.
People just need to be responsible. You can go for a 30 minute exercise walk without coming within 10 metres of anybody and it will do no harm whatsoever. People are more at risk of spreading the disease purely by getting stopped so you can give the authorisation code for being out of the house.

If you bring in a system like that it will need to be policed which is taking key people away from where they will be more needed.

It's completely nuts.

This is the problem - they aren't.

Still seeing gangs of teenagers roving the streets as ever was.

I'd happily see them shot with rubber bullets personally.

People demanding full scale lockdowns - doing that now means we would have to stay in lockdown until potentially the middle to end of June as thats the expected peak time of the virus.

I hazard a guess all those currently evoking the Blitz spirit after self isolating for a grand total of 2 days wont be so positive if they haven't seen the outdoors in over 8 weeks.

Simply put the experts will know when the right time is to turn on and off these lockdowns based on a number of facts - thats why Susan, 36 from Warrington needs to pipedown and let them get on with it - same as the reporters desperate to undermine Johnson and whip up a fuss.
Do you mean not to do it like China, incase there is a rebound peak? Could still happen, but without rigorous immunological testing- who knows who has had it, and who's successfully seroconverted. IF the data is to be believed- China has had less deaths than Italy, and no new cases originating from inside the country. There's scraps of data to suggest there'd be 95% less cases if China implemented the lock down two weeks earlier.
The on/off bit (johnson mentioned opening/closing schools for this purpose) is likely a wee bit too late. Susan, 36 from Warrington may be an infectious diseases consultant. Loads of doctors live there for cheap houses, some ok schools, and easy access to most Mersey hospitals.
Johnson is a useless bluffing sack of air, and has proven to be consistently incompetent.

Should people undermine safety measures? No.

Should people challenge reports that Cummings allegedly advised economics over lives, and Boris was gonna implement that with his herd immunity crap/single peak/let it burn through the community? Of course, with every breath. If it was Corbyn and whoever was his advisor in this position, the pitchforks would be out, and I'd be too, pitchfork in hand.

Edit: I don't believe in martial law, and there should be planning to enable shopping ect without breaching 2m rule to the next person, but seriously, people need to stop congregating and take responsibility themselves.

It’s necessary because a large percentage of people are ignoring the advice. Consequently more people will die.

Hell yes. It’s absolutely necessary now.

I have just spoken to a friend who lives in Amsterdam.

They are under the same measures as us so far (obviously they enacted them sooner).

No bars etc open. Just supermarkets/chemists. And yes, the parks are open. People are allowed to go out. They are just been asked to make a sensible approach.

Perhaps that will change in the coming days but as it stands that's where they are.

And it's exactly the same as here. Everything is shut. People are allowed to go out of their houses. You just have to be sensible.

Idiots going to the park to hang around in big groups are being as stupid as the ones who go to the supermarket all at once (albeit, the ones who are cramped indoors in that instance are much more dangerous in terms of spreading it).

If you're just sensible then it's fine. I've just been on a little run. Saw two people. Went on a walk earlier before the crowds in a park and it was fine. Keep your distance.

People actively want to live in a nanny state. Yet they're the same ones who call people 'boot lickers' for suggesting it's good the chancellor has been prepared to pump so much money in.
