Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Hang on. The 'snowflakes' description I see is normally directed at people on the left?

And, while I don't agree with a lot of what they say, i can't say that the ones I know/follow aren't taking it seriously.

They're the ones who are bossing people around telling them to stay indoors and shouting the loudest - they always do. The ones who blew their nose last Thursday and will now be in their house for two weeks but by God will they make sure to tell everybody that.

Unless we've got crossed wires here?

Oh, I think pretty much everyone in that age group is a snowflake, in that they can't engage with a contrary point of view without being horrified/offended by it.

That's both the right and left. The art of debate is long dead.

Fair play!

Hope I buck the trend ;) (or maybe not!)

Based on the numbers from China and South Korea, I'd say 10% is very unlikely. A multiplier of the official numbers of between 20 and 100 is probably about right. Even using 100 only gives us roughly half a million, so less than 1%

I hope you're right, but I think you're miles out.

I think it's much, much higher than 1%.

Just consider all the premier league footballers as a sample. How many cases have been reported between all the clubs? It's much higher than 1%. Why would it be any different between this sample population and the population at large?

why did Facebook have a reserve of nearly 3/4 million masks?
We had a reserve of 20 (which we handed into the local hospital this week). The smoke from the wildfires the past two years has been awful so presume they brought them so their staff could still go into work if it happened this year - just glad they did thh as federal/state planning for them has been awful.

I have refused to debate with someone in the cancelling the premier league thread .its unusual for me , I don’t think I’m a Snowflake I really just don’t want a ban right at this minute .

What is going on with people heading to the coast today?

Easter weekend gonna be a real problem with people thinking it's fine to just head off for the weekend like under normal circumstances

Incredibly stupid behaviour - mindless morons who are bringing total lockdown for all a lot closer.

I've had to be in Louth Lincolnshire this weekend and their local news reporting Skegness and Bridlington (East Yorks coast) have had an incredibly busy weekend - with far more visitors.

It's just unbelievable how thick and selfish some people are - absolutely incredible

It’s necessary because a large percentage of people are ignoring the advice. Consequently more people will die.
Deal with the ones who are irresponsible then. The ones meeting in groups and socialising. Fine them. Lock them up. Shoot them. But donlt enalise everybody just because of the few.

People will lose their minds if they are locked up.

It’s going to prove they should have kept the schools open.....

I do think they bowed to pressure to an extent though at the same time school's were shutting themselves and obviously asking parents to send their kids to school when all this is going on isn't easy.

And I'm not meaning to come across as an old bloke who thinks all kids are evil or anything. I only left high school 9 years ago fgs.

Most kids will be absolutely fine at home and if their parents are able to then they will be cared for/provided for and it'll run as smoothly as it would in a holiday.

But there will be a minority (and given this is country wide, that's a large, large number) who either don't have that or simply have no interest in following rules or instructions.

And there the ones that were outside supermarkets in groups of 20 or so on Friday night. And they'll be doing that for the foreseeable. It was genuinely like you'd see on a Yr11's last day of school on Friday (I suppose because that's exactly what it was!)

I've just seen that.

Bloody hell.

Yeah they're trying to pass it off as "routine" and unrelated or just as a precaution.

I don't believe in coincidences - a "routine" pneumonia-related vaccine in the midst of a pandemic that causes pneumonia. OK sure...

Even if we take it on face value, as said earlier, why isn't this "routine" for everyone over the age of 65 then?

Exactly.

Like plenty of us have been saying and i'm sure you and anyone with sense thinks, this whole 'protecting old people/the vulnerable' excuse only really washes fully if they'd have been doing more of it in the first place.

Before, you know, the world economy burns to the ground.

Not saying it would stop the virus doing damage - it definitely wouldn't. But surely there have been tons of steps which could have been done here which would at least have given some leeway.

I think the Pneumoccal vaccine is only effective against bacterial pneumonia. The type of pneumonia brought about by flu is classed as viral pneumonia.

I'm not an expert but I don't believe it would help in this case.
You're right- its viral pneumonia.
Post flu, ect, you are at risk of secondary bacterial infections, and the bacterial pneumonia that may come with it, but GPs dont usually suggest prophylactic antibiotics to try to prevent thos happening.
Edit: I'm pretty sure there's GPs on this forum, hopefully they will chip in :)
