Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

The worry I have with very widespread boosters, vs just the vulnerable, is it takes even more supply away from other countries that still desperately need their first shots. We really do have to make more headway on vaccinating the world, some of the vaccination rates in poorer countries are heartbreaking.

Ideally it would be good if they can get to a position where an Autumn booster is required rather than six monthly boosters.

Perhaps a better way to phrase it is that the messaging should have been that, though the initial two shots gave fantastic protection, boosters might be required as Covid mutated and to keep the protection against symptomatic infection very high.

Reading this thread and elsewhere just feel a lot of people think the goalposts have been moved “I thought iif we just had the two jabs I could forget about it forever and go back to normal life”
I think the fact is it’s going to take a long time to get things under control and people need to roll with the punches. I want the situation handled competently and to make sure my son’s social and academic development isn’t damaged any more than it has been already.

Most developed countries should have in place this winter:

- Strong testing/quarantined measures depending on Vaccine Profile for travel.
- Mandatory Masks in public settings.
- Social Distance measures in all public places - including work and on Public Transport.
- Limits on hospitality - how many at a table, table service etc.
- Passports for hospitality/live events/hotels/weddings etc
- Antigen testing, for access to entertainment and hospitality - kiosks set up, that you can take an official test, to be provided by a passport to your phone to show a negative result to access hospitality.
- Strong regulations / enforcement of all of the above.

That's pretty much as safe as it can get living with Covid, then look at it next March.

To many countries sleep walking into the winter, the dogs on the street know, Autumn and Winter is prime time for this virus.
What about gigs and clubs mate? Or going through match etc?
People aren’t wearing masks at concerts. And you can’t keep shutting down entire industries. So the answer is what, a vaccine pass or proof of negative result? But there’s still probably going to be plenty of people asymptomatic who are able to spread at those events?
No easy answer is there

There are reasons to be optimistic on that front between vaccination and naturally acquired immunity

If it works out that the top up dose is every 1-2 years that would be great as its a lot more manageable.

A six monthly vaccine gives anti vaxxers ammunition and people who don't read into it will start to think the vaccine doesn't work if its needed so regularly.

Even annually it would be OK (with the huge proviso that supplies are OK worldwide).

Especially if could get a combined Covid/flu jab, or at least make it standard procedure that they were both administered at the same time, with both being adapted to the variants most widespread that year as would likely increase uptake of the flu jab.

Plus easing the strain on gp surgeries etc that have to administer it, mine is closed Thursdays for normal appointments as the doctors are doing the vaccinations only. And it's always been hard to get an appointment there even before this started.

The world didn't end this summer and they were completing first doses then, so with our seasonality 6 monthly sounds overkill just in general

Obviously the Pfizer lobbies will push for it though

Agree that Pfizer et al will have pound/dollar signs in their eyes and big grins but tbf there does seem to be clinical evidence of the need for boosters this winter, especially for certain groups.

Israel wasn’t even in winter and their booster rollout made a huge difference to both their cases and hospitalizations.

Pretty simple, you put a filter up - part of a requirement for entry is a clear antigen test. Once a clear result is detected a QR code is sent to your phone and its scanned on entry with your ticket. Its asymptomatic people you want to catch with this.

Its happening all over Europe now, at any events or big nightlife area, they have kiosks where you can get an antigen test for a euro, once the positive test comes back in three mins you are sent a QR code to your phone that lasts 24 hours and can get access to pubs, restaurants, gigs etc and its game on. Thus eliminating any potential transmission as best you can. Its working all over most of Europe at the moment, it just needs to be copied.

See i would see the above as keeping these industries safe and open with an appropriate safeguarding strategy opposed to just being blind, letting everyone in, spiking cases and closing eventually, this is mitigation and "living with Covid".

Okay, absolute sucker for anyone who's paid all that money, possibly travelled a long way, all the cost of that, to then be turned away on the door?

Who's responsible for refunding people?

Why should people be doing that if they've been vaccinated? They've done their bit. What about all the people they've been in contact with on the way to said venue?

It's madness mate. I am playing devil's advocate btw, but it's madness.
