The UK virus variant is all over the place.

33% in March, is it not acceptable to suggest that in 4 months we will approach 80%?

If take up in younger age groups is similar to what has happened so far, we will have far more than 80% of adults vaccinated in a few months time.

I'm sceptical the government will meet the target of offering all adults a jab by the end of July, but by early autumn at the latest I'd say we will have got to that point.

If they protect from serious illness, why is the Chief Medical Officer saying we can expect a 30,000 death toll in another surge this summer?

Can you die without getting seriously ill !!??

Because he said that's what will happen if we release the measures before the dates currently planned as the earliest options.

But, again, you know this.

Dunno mate. They're already into the early 50s, and there's plenty of people in their 20s who are key workers or like @Connor getting it as they help care for vulnerable people etc, or younger people in the vulnerable groups.

Moderna to come soonish, potentially J&J (not sure if the UK has got that secured?), and loads more AZ on the way.

I'm pretty sure that the end of July target will be met.

Yeah you seem to be focusing a lot on schools closing.

You know why they close, right? To prevent infections, you keep suggesting this is a bad thing, you know very well the virus is still circulating, so why wouldn't there be infections?

Why not focus on the hundreds if not thousands of schools that are remaining open, virus free?

Its ok, I know why.

The schools that have shut or have year groups sent home or whatever are the proof of the track and trace that him and others have been asking for is in place.

They are testing twice a week, so of course some are going to be shut.

I could be wrong, but was he not indicating that 30,000 figure would happen if we opened up earlier than has been planned? I certainly hope that is what he meant.

Thats exactly what he was referring to. Its only been pointed out about 50 times though.

It's possible that they will get everyone a first dose by July, it will just all depend on how much supply comes in between now and then. Will be interesting if the take up stays extremely high once we get down to the 20s & 30s etc. I haven't heard many of around my age saying they won't take it mind you.

Honestly think younger are more likely.

Shove anything in us, so we can go take ket in fields again.

But jokes aside, we're gonna be wanting to do stuff again and generally I think younger people are more likely to be open to vaccine programmes than Facebook Karens.

Yes. I understand that. But the claims for the flu and the flu vaccine are not the same as those that have been claimed for the impact on Covid19 by the Covid19 vaccine. And there was no mention - in all the hulabaloo when rolling out the vaccine and its impact - about modelling that suggests 50,000-55,000 more deaths in the next year or so with the vaccines rolled out.

This was not in the script being read out by experts and commentators alike in the last 4 months. Only a fool would suggest otherwise.

The script changed in February, when modelling from Warwick and Imperial came up with the 50 000 - 55 000 Covid deaths between March 2021 and June 2022 based on certain opening up dates (the ones the government has proposed). Whitty has dampened down vaccination 'expectations' and that is why he said 'the vaccine will not work for everyone and '30 000 more deaths' if the lockdown is lifted too earlier than proposed, because SAGE got the modelling data.

The UK has ordered 30 mill doses mate, Jansen has applied for approval from the UK regulator, i believe delivery of first doses is scheduled for July.

Looks like Novavax isn't far off approval either. So could be seeing that come into play in the coming months too!

I'm actually confident that even with high uptake, the UK will hit the end of July target. And that means, all being well, every adult getting their second jab by, latest, end of October.
