Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Because he said that's what will happen if we release the measures before the dates currently planned as the earliest options.

But, again, you know this.
He and others also say that there will be a likely increase in infections with schools reopening. And if you think the 'roadmap' will be shelved if that happens you must be daft. The surge he warns of is baked into this roadmap...and therefore the casualties too.

On the vaccination experience, I had mine in a smallish surgery here in London. From speaking to the first person to leaving it was less than 10 minutes. I know this because I took a photo when I arrived and called my mum when I left so can see the exact times.

First person took my address and asked me a few questions (have I had covid, any symptoms recently etc). Then spoke to a second person who took my name and gave me my papers. There were about 4 people ahead of me in the queue (all socially distanced) and from what I could tell 4 private rooms where the jabs were being given. I was then in that queue for a few minutes and then into the room. Person giving me the jab asked me a couple of questions, did the paperwork and then gave me the jab. Was probably in the room for 2 or 3 minutes. She told me to take paracetamol if I felt ill afterwards and sent me on my way.

The doctor was at the end of her shift and she said she had done 69 jabs in 4 hours which works out at a jab every 3 and a half minutes or so. Not too shabby!

Hospital figures - 199 deaths were announced today, up 27 on yesterday and down 206 on last Thursday. 159 deaths were in English hospitals, up 14 on yesterday and down 25 on last week. The 7 day rolling average falls to 169.57

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 181 deaths were announced today, down 9 on yesterday and down 61 on last Thursday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 163.29

For the 60 day cut off, 277 deaths were announced today, down 119 on yesterday and down 97 on last Thursday. The 7 day rolling average falls to 282.57

I could be wrong, but was he not indicating that 30,000 figure would happen if we opened up earlier than has been planned? I certainly hope that is what he meant.
If we open on time that will happen if what he also concedes about schools leading to a spike of infections is taken into account.

Whitty's job the other day was to get that information about vaccines 'not taking' in huge numbers out there. Job done. But that leaves us with a nightmare where vaccines are not the solution but the economy will be thrown wide open anyway without a world class test, track and trace system and behavioural changes doubled-down on - such as face masks and social distancing.

But they said that when the roadmap was announced. They fully expect a spike. The dates set are the ones that have been deemed to give them the best chance of

a) assessing the impact
b) managing the impact in line with the vaccine roll out
c) changing the dates if needed

He also said - or Vallance did - on Feb 22nd that yes, every time more stuff opens up, there will ultimately be some deaths. It's about limiting the number of deaths as much as is possible. But that is the trade off that every single country is making.

No one has ever said there will be no increases in infections.

Its the transmission of infections into serious illness and death that will be greatly reduced. Unless we start opening up quickly, which we arent.

End of day you might get lucky like that.

Overall, there is a mixed bag of experiences here to draw on.

The script changed in February, when modelling from Warwick and Imperial came up with the 50 000 - 55 000 Covid deaths between March 2021 and June 2022 based on certain opening up dates (the ones the government has proposed). Whitty has dampened down vaccination 'expectations' and that is why he said 'the vaccine will not work for everyone and '30 000 more deaths' if the lockdown is lifted too earlier than proposed, because SAGE got the modelling data.
Exactly.

Everyone please read this from @ramacca .

One from you who hasnt had theirs.

One from one lad who said it took about 30 minutes.

Dozens from folk who have had a really positive experience.

Do you believe tens of thousands more dead constitutes 'limiting the numbers'?

Apparently not if the figures Whitty stated are what they're expecting.

I mean, WTF are we banking on the vaccines if that death toll is correct in any future surge?

This is why I and others have always stated "dont see the vaccines as a panacea". They are an aid, not a solution. They need to be used in conjunction with a world class test and trace system with VERY sharp teeth and in conjunction with us ALL adopting for the next few years at least social distancing and mask wearing and have that as the behavioiural norm from now on.

That's not an accurate reflection of what people have experienced here.

Go to any of the vaccination centres apart from very late on in the day and there will likely as not be a queue and wait. That's ok if the protocols are all in place and observed. I accept they mostly will be, especially at NHS sites. But 25 million jabs in 3 months under these conditions will surely lead to short cuts and inefficiency. It's just natural.

Wouldnt disagree with your final paragraph.

But even with a super duper TTI, masks and SD, if the vaccines dont work, we are toast.

But they do, for now.

Just had my second jab.... turned up on time, they recorded my details, check my temperature, asked if I’d had any symptoms or a negative test in last 28 days, escorted me to the main area where a nurse again checked my details, I was then allocated another nurse who took me to his table and gave me the jab, I was then escorted to a waiting area where I was monitored for 15 minutes before being allowed to leave.... fantastic organisation and service.
